Second & Third Grade: March 17-21, 2025
Hello, Second and Third Grade Families,
Last week, we continued our Fiber Block with a review of satin, wool, and linen. We looked at the process of growing cotton and how it is processed into cloth. Ki Ieva provided us with stems from cotton plants and taught us that when cotton grows, it forms a white flower that only blooms for one day. After the flower blooms, it turns pink, then withers and falls away. The flower falling away exposes the boll, the white fluffy part that most people picture when they think of cotton.
The class worked on several projects throughout the week. Some are still completing their looms made of wool, and everyone is in the process of writing a fibers book and creating an art piece out of cotton Today, Ki Ieva led us in a lesson on wool where the children were able to wash, card, and dye wool. The students have enjoyed working with their hands during this block.
Last week, we also introduced a new element to our morning circle: bouncy balls! The children are learning how to control the lacrosse-sized balls and bounce them in synchronicity. Doing so increases student’s abilities to focus and supports cognitive integration of lesson material. We will be using the balls while singing and practicing our multiplication tables for the remainder of the year. On Monday, when the balls were introduced, they were bouncing all over the floor, under the desks, and even up on shelves. By Friday, everyone was able to bounce up to eight times without missing. Some students learned to bounce two balls at the same time, and some even began switching hands between bounces.
This week we will continue our Fiber Block by discussing animal hides and furs, bamboo, and synthetic fibers. We will conclude our block with a visit to AB Farms on Friday!
