First Grade: April 14 - 18, 2025
Dear First Grade Families,
We are looking forward to seeing you this Friday at the Annual Auction, our biggest fundraiser of the year, which promises to be a fun-filled evening. Our class auction project, along with unique, handmade offerings from the other classes as well as many other items, will be unveiled for the school community to admire and bid on.
Thank you for supporting and attending our Teddy Bear Picnic last Friday! It was a memorable occasion for the children and a lovely kickoff to our Class Play Block, which has begun this week. Students enjoyed introducing their cuddly friends to their classmates and getting creative by preparing pretend snacks for them in the forest. During Circle, students had been practicing the song “Teddy Bear Picnic” and were amused by the idea of toys picnicking in the woods. At this time of the school year, when big transitions are on the horizon, the experience of bringing a comforting toy from home can ease anxiety, so hopefully it provided each child with a boost!
Last week, the class finished their final Math Block of the year. In addition to strengthening their ability to add and subtract within 20, the class enjoyed drawing a spring valley scene with 20 eggs of many colors hidden in the hillside beneath a rainbow. The drawing illustrated a story about the Math gnomes filling baskets with 20 colorful eggs for King Equals. The gnomes work in pairs, so Drake Divide gathers 10, and Micah Minus needs to find 10 more. When she can only find 3, it is up to him to find the other 17 to fill the basket. (In addition to illustrating math concepts, the gnomes model positive values such as kindness and generosity of soul!) In this Main Lesson Book drawing, the children created their first crayon border that featured a pattern, which was composed of spring leaves, in this case. Their drawing skills and associated confidence have come along in leaps and bounds!
Students began their new block on “The Three Bears” by listening to the classic English tale, so charming in its simplicity, repetition, and varied voices! During this block, the children will rehearse for the play and also write and illustrate scenes from the story in their lesson books.
