Kindergarten Chickadees: March 16 - 20, 2026
Osiyo, Chickadee Families,
The Chickadees had a great deal of fun acting out the story of The Little Red Hen last week and took turns playing the hen, horse, cow, cat, miller, and wheat. Students who played the part of wheat grew from seeds to wheat, then were harvested, milled into flour, and baked into loaves of bread; they were busy! All the children demonstrated strong memory as they acted out different roles and recited simple lines without hesitation. The humor of the story was enjoyed so much that each forgot to be shy about speaking up when they had lines to say! On Wednesday, the students also enjoyed freshly baked French bread made by Ki Holly.
The wet-felted play mat for our class auction project is well underway! The Chickadees are learning patience and perseverance through their work, which takes several days to complete and utilizes certain techniques, as well as hand strength and dexterity. The mat has green for the garden area, blue for a small creek, and brown for the animal area. Once the play mat is complete, students will wet-felt eggs and the climbing rock. The class continued to build their hand strength and movements as they ground oats into flour using a stone mortar and pestle. Free play time this week was filled with digging and mud kitchen play.
This week, the class will begin a spring equinox story, continue working on the felted play mat, and begin planting seeds. They will also start the Chickadee No Waste Garden by putting the celery ends in water. It will be very busy leading up to spring break!
