First Grade: March 30 - April 3, 2026
Dear First Grade Families,
Welcome back to school! Prior to the break, our class community came together within the wider school community for Grandfriends' Day. Students shone on stage and enjoyed support from special people in their life! Thank you all for attending, assisting, and sharing refreshments and camaraderie.
Recharged from spring break, the class plunged right into the last block of the year: the class play! The next few weeks will find students building their confidence in performing in front of others (starting with each other) while letting their creative juices flow. In terms of vocal work, students will develop their enunciation, intonation, and projection. They will learn some basic conventions of blocking (actors’ movements, positions, and stage business) and explore a variety of facial expressions. The task of learning lines will be tackled through daily repetition and drama exercises. With regard to social and emotional learning, students will develop their capacity for listening to their classmates and showing appreciation for their talents. Each student will play a character in a group or team, which provides a wonderful opportunity for teamwork and deepening of bonds through this shared experience. This is truly a fun and multifaceted block!
In tandem with play rehearsals during the Main Lesson, the class is beginning work on a lesson book about the play’s story, “The Town Musicians of Bremen.” Within the book, students will bring all the skills together they have been working on this year, so it will be a grand culmination of their efforts! Language arts skills include handwriting as well as writing conventions, such as spelling, capitalization, punctuation, and spacing. Furthermore, students will write and illustrate word problems connected with the story.
