Fourth & Fifth Grade: March 2-5, 2026
Dear Fourth and Fifth Grade Families,
This week, the class began their eighth Main Lesson Block: Decimal Fractions. Building on our fractions from last month’s mathematics topic, we broke down how proper fractions and mixed numbers can be written differently. The students were reintroduced to the usage of place values of whole numbers. Then they learned how proper fractions can also fit into place values by occupying positions in the tenths, hundredths, thousandths place, and so on. The only difference is now that the decimal point is what divides the whole part of a number from the fractional part of one.
Once the students became familiar with the concept of what decimal fractions are and how to properly write them, we next dove into the purpose of them. The students did a domino decimal relay race, where they had to create a decimal number based on the dominoes given as quickly as possible because their efforts were being timed. They later learned that the times they were given were technically incorrect, and they received the complete time on the stopwatch, which was rounded to the nearest hundredth of a second. In this activity, the students understood that decimals help provide more accuracy and can be used to break a tie. This led to a discussion in sports where winners were often decided by the tiniest margins. Now that the students have an understanding of what decimals are and their respective place values, next week, they will work on adding and subtracting decimals. We will utilize real-world applications, such as counting money
During the language arts period, the students are nearing the end of their Tristan Strong novels. Everyone made their final predictions on the much-anticipated ending. Next week, we will finish the novel, begin their book reports, and, as a class, write a review of the novel. The class also began the first table ready for their class play, which will be based on Greek mythology. The students had fun trying out different roles and working on different forms of expression. Within the next week, each will receive their final roles.
