Joyful Beginnings Hummingbirds: March 9 - 13, 2026
Dear Joyful Beginnings Hummingbirds Families,
Thank you all for taking the time to attend conferences last week. It is truly a gift to pause and reflect together on your children’s growth, development, and unique unfolding. It is a joy to guide your children alongside you during some of the most tender years of childhood.
Last week was full of sweet giggles and surprises. Two baby turtles appeared in the sandbox, three Hummingbird birthdays were joyfully celebrated, and countless mushrooms seemed to spring up overnight throughout our outdoor classroom. Oh, the silliness and wonder of springtime!
On Monday, as a remedy for a few sleepy eyes after the time change, we took an impromptu walk to the creek beach, where the children experimented with “skipping” rocks and sticks across the water. The children, typically quite content within the cozy boundaries of our Hummingbird nest, were delighted to discover this “hidden” area of campus, a destination that they will frequent when they reach Forest Kindergarten.
Tuesday brought sunshine, homemade muffins, and birthday guests. On Wednesday, we exercised the small muscles of the hand through modeling clay work and enjoyed berries and whipped cream as we celebrated another special birthday child. Thursday arrived with a high wind advisory, prompting sweet questions about why Brother Wind was so “hyper” that day. The afternoon ended with children ankle-deep in the farm “river,” splashing and delighting in muddy water and, if you can believe it, another birthday celebration to close the week.
Next week, the children will hear the story of Grandma Ivy’s River Adventure, begin sorting, measuring, and scooping dried flowers and herbs for our auction project, and continue enjoying our lively spring circle. The children have grown especially fond of this rhythmic rain verse:
Pitter patter, pitter patter
Listen to the rain
Falling on the windowsill
And on the window pane.
And who does love the rain?
The slowly creeping snail,
The grass, the flowers, the grain,
The birds up in the treetops,
The frog upon his lily pad.
And the children love the rain,
Splashing in the puddles,
Splishy splashy wet,
Splashing in the puddles,
How wet can we get?
Pitter patter, pitter patter,
Listen to the rain.
Pitter patter, pitter patter,
The sun comes out again.
