Second Grade: December 9 - 13

The second grade class enjoyed another busy and fun week.  We shared a story about Saint Lucia and learned and how she helped many others during her lifetime.  The children made “crowns” of yarn using a chain stitch and then “chain-stitched their chain-stitch” and enjoyed the process of doing so.  It was a longer project, and we helped each other complete them on Friday as well as adding paper candles to the crowns.  We then delivered treats to all in the school as Saint Lucia brought food to those in need.  A big thank you to Raya’s mom who made a very large amount of cookies to help us with this fun experience!

Based on a class discussion of time, we changed plans this past week from learning about cloud patterns and shapes, and instead shifted to lessons focusing on telling time using an analog clock.  Using various props, we built a large clock face on the floor and learned about seconds, minutes and hours as well as how the hands of a clock work together.  We spent time doing various activities for a minute such as standing on one foot, hopping and humming.  We learned a minute can feel very long!   The students are having fun with the now colored hands on our classroom clock and are practicing telling how many minutes have passed during an activity.  Based on how interested they were this past week, we will continue these time lessons this week and return to weather at another time (pun intended ).  We will also be sharing a story about Judah Maccabee this week and doing a few crafts based around this story.

If you aren’t already, send in a lighter jacket or sweatshirt for your child to wear during the mornings while the dome warms up.  Remember those rainboots daily too!   Thursday is our last day of the fall semester; there is no school on Friday.  I will be asking the children to bring home most of their items on Thursday for washing, sizing, etc.  Finally, the students will end the semester Thursday afternoon on the playground singing holiday songs and enjoying hot cocoa as a treat from all the teachers.

With Gratitude,

Melissa
