Second Grade: December 2- 6

Hi Garden Families!

We started a new block this week which focuses on the weather and also includes Saint and Hero stories. We began the week with a story about the wind and how it is created. We then heard a story about water vapor that forms into a rain droplet and turns into a snowflake that lands on the edge of a frozen mountain steam. We then had fun cutting out paper snowflakes which are now on our dome window. We also painted a mountain scene and used a clean brush to remove paint to make snow-capped mountains and splattered water droplets with our brushes to give the effect of snow (it mostly worked ;). Our saint was Saint Nicolas. The story taught us that even as a child, Nicolas was generous and kind-hearted, especially to other children. We filled the chalkboard with words from the story and the children wrote a part of the story themselves and, once corrected, copied their writing onto a master book page which they then illustrated.

The Advent Spiral was a lovely experience for all the students. It was wonderful to watch them walk it and see their personalities shine. The First Friday assembly was also lots of fun and the children all enjoyed their performance! Compliments to our wonderful music teacher, Ki Kathee, for leading all the grades in such a fun, musical and uplifting way!

This week, we will continue following our raindrop and also study the clouds. While weather study actually comes in the fifth grade, this is a gentle introduction through story and art rather than through scientific study and terminology. We will also hear the story of Saint Lucia as well.

With gratitude,

Melissa
