SPECIALTY CLASS: American Sign Language

Hello and happy March!

This Spring semester in ASL has already been so much fun. Friday mornings are highly anticipated here at The Garden!

In Kindy, we have been singing and signing to continue to practice our colors, the weather, and how we feel. Encourage your Kindergartener to sign their favorite color, what the weather is like, and how they feel.

In 1st and 2nd grade, we have been getting really confident signing our alphabet, numbers 0-20 (with the poem that 2nd Grade preformed in the assembly), days of the week, and our names. They love to play “sign and reveal” where I sign a letter, number, color, or even word and they do their best to catch the sign and write it on their chalk boards and reveal. Ask your 1st or 2nd grader to fingerspell their names, and any other name or word they know/see as this is great organic practice.

In Middle and Upper Grades, we have been signing a verse written by Rudolf Steiner about our head, body, and hands. They now have it nearly memorized. Both grades have been working very hard on receptive fingerspelling, numbers 0-100 (and up), months and seasonal activities, animals, and verbs/nouns in ASL.  They love to play our classifier game where there’s a handshape we all have a chance to use as a different object or action. They have been practicing having dialogue with partners or small groups. Additionally, Upper Graders are currently writing introductions and translating them into ASL. See what new signs your Middle or Upper grader can teach you.

I’m so proud of each and every student for their enthusiasm and hard work in ASL! I can’t wait to see the growth between now and the end of the year!

Warm Regards,

Ki Emily
