Second Grade: April 13 - 17

This past week our class continued hearing stories based on Native American Tales.  Our drawings and copy work gave us an opportunity to enhance our remembrances of the stories and also to practice writing a variety of words ending in "ed".  The weekly lesson focused on parents sharing words written with the suffix "ed", allowing the children to hear and experience how "ed" can sound like /t/, /d/ and /id/ at the end of a word, but all are still spelled with the letters "ed".  We also had the option to work on math worksheets practicing adding doubles (2+2, 3+3, etc.) and others practicing adding ten to a number.  There were also two math games offered.  One with dice to help us practice place value skills and another using a hundreds chart to play various numeral recognition, counting, and adding games.  We also continued hearing the story, The Wind Boy.

Next week we will begin hearing new Anansi the Spider stories.  We shared these stories during the first semester and the children really adored Anansi's mischievous doings and the end result of these antics.  The students will continue having drawings and now begin to create their own summaries for these stories.  There will also be lessons offered to review two spelling lessons and learn a new rule.  Each lesson comes with a drawing to add a creative element and writing to reinforce the lessons.  We will finish the storyThe Wind Boy and then begin the last book of a series we started last year about the Magic Faraway Tree, titled The Folk of the Faraway Tree.

It was wonderful to connect with both students and parents in our separate Zoom sessions.  It brings home how far apart we are, and yet how we are still connected through our love for our school, learning, and each other.  Thank you to all who were able to join us, and to those who couldn't, please know we missed you!

With gratitude,

Melissa
