Middle School: January 19 - 22

Last week we kicked off an algebra block by learning about the history of algebra in the ancient world. We learned about the work of the Babylonians, Greeks, and Persians that led to the modern system of symbols and manipulations to solve equations. We connected the ancient roots to our Renaissance block as we learned about the "math duels" that were carried out by scholars in Renaissance Italy. We also had a lesson on real life applications of algebra to get ahead of the "when will we ever have to use this in real life?" grumbles. They were not entirely convinced of the practicality of x and y, but they indulged me and took in the lesson. We covered introductory algebra concepts related to integers and simple expressions throughout the first semester, and last week we moved into solving equations ("real algebra" according to the students). We had expected moments of frustration and confusion, but the students accepted the challenges with their usual enthusiasm and finished the week with a sense of accomplishment. It is so exciting to witness those light bulb moments when everything clicks!

We continue to wind down a few Renaissance projects. The students will continue to work on Renaissance portraits in their fine arts class with Ki Fatima over the coming weeks. We are also wrapping up the book we're reading about Joan of Arc, and the students will have related assignments once we complete her biography. Her story has taken us on a deep dive into the politics of fifteenth century France and England, and we were able to make some meaningful connections between coronation ceremonies and the Inauguration events and traditions in our country last week. These connection points are one of my favorite aspects of the Waldorf curriculum, and they serve to engage the students on a deeper level as they're able to connect familiar past experiences with class material and then make new links in their future experiences.

We also had some light bulb moments with our grammar work this week. I look forward to seeing this clarity show up in their next writing assignments!
