Third Grade: January 19 -22

The third-grade class continued working with wool this week, finishing weaving and learning to spin fleece with the drop spindles they made in class last week.  The students all experienced with Ki Ieva the techniques used to make yarn in this new way.  We also spent some time wet felting balls, and we will eventually sew designs onto these balls for decorations. Additionally, the class continued to practice creating independent summaries based on a list of events we wrote together in class.  We wrote a list of steps for gathering wool and turning it into cloth using transition words such as “first”, “then”, and “next” to show this process.  We also reviewed the four types of sentences in a fun, game-like format.

In math this week, we focused on adding two-digit numbers with regrouping.  The students worked equations both horizontally and vertically.  Using equations such as 26+35, the students practiced regrouping (a.k.a.”carrying”) to find solutions. Students who are ready for larger numbers receive additional equations to solve using numbers into the hundreds and thousands places.  Many students are up for a challenge as well, and work to solve these equations, often pleased with their attempts.  All our practice equations are eventually solved on the board, demonstrating ways to reach the solutions to support all students as they further develop this new math skill.  Finally, we continued using worksheets to practice and increase our speed with our basic addition and subtraction skills.  We will continue focusing on addition and subtraction with larger numbers as well as completing our various projects using wool this week.

Parent conferences are right around the corner!  Please sign-up using the link provided.  Sessions will be in Zoom format.  I look forward to seeing each of you and sharing all your child has been doing at school.
