Second Grade: October 4 - 8

In our new math block last week, the second grade eased back into math with skip counting by twos to reinforce the twos table. We talked about cherries growing in pairs on the cherry trees and counted cherries on the board and with manipulatives. The students listened to a story of a boy who went to his grandmother to pick cherries for a cherry pie. On his way back home, the cherries in the boy’s basket continuously dwindled. Throughout the story, the class kept track of the number of cherries in the boy’s basket. The students documented the story in the form of math sentences, on the board, using all four operations. The class also talked about the different strategies to compute the answers to the math sentences. In tandem with math, the students practiced jumping rope all week long. Jumping rope takes rhythmic counting into the body memory and integrates the senses and overall body coordination.

Last week we experienced a good mix of rain and sunshine. Please make sure that you are equipping your child with the right gear for any weather.

Reminders:

  • Pack rain gear.

  • Pack an extra set of clothing, especially socks.

  • Please bring boots for Environmental Education Class.

  • Fall Conferences will come up soon. Please see the link in the main section of the Monday Messenger to sign up!

  • Our class will be building a witch scarecrow this year. You will receive more details about needed supplies and a date to meet on campus and assemble the scarecrow this week.

Best,
