Third Grade: October 4 - 8

In our new math block last week, the third-grade students entered into the experience of time. A very long time ago, people told time by the sun, the moon, and the stars. The students learned that the ancient Egyptians created a yearly calendar based on the annual flooding of the Nile, which coincided with the star Sirius appearing on the horizon. The class then explored our modern calendar with 365 days (+ an extra day in leap years), 52 weeks, and seven days a week. We used a poem to learn how many days are in each month. While practicing the 4s-Table with various rhythmic and hands-on activities, the class learned how to figure out future leap years. This week, the students will continue exploring time.

Last week we experienced a mix of rain and sunshine. Please equip your child with the right gear for any weather since the third grade will work in the garden every day.

Reminders:

  • Pack rain gear.

  • Pack an extra set of clothing, especially socks.

  • Please bring boots for Environmental Education Class.

  • Fall Conferences will be soon. Please see the link in the main section of the Monday Messenger to sign up!

  • Our class will be building a witch scarecrow this year. You will receive more information about needed supplies and a date to meet on campus and assemble scarecrow soon.

Best,
