In our new math block last week, the third-grade students entered into the experience of time. A very long time ago, people told time by the sun, the moon, and the stars. The students learned that the ancient Egyptians created a yearly calendar based on the annual flooding of the Nile, which coincided with the star Sirius appearing on the horizon. The class then explored our modern calendar with 365 days (+ an extra day in leap years), 52 weeks, and seven days a week. We used a poem to learn how many days are in each month. While practicing the 4s-Table with various rhythmic and hands-on activities, the class learned how to figure out future leap years. This week, the students will continue exploring time.
Last week we experienced a mix of rain and sunshine. Please equip your child with the right gear for any weather since the third grade will work in the garden every day.
Reminders:
Pack rain gear.
Pack an extra set of clothing, especially socks.
Please bring boots for Environmental Education Class.
Fall Conferences will be soon. Please see the link in the main section of the Monday Messenger to sign up!
