Dear Third-Grade Parents,
This week, the third-graders experimented with specially marked candle clocks. The Anglo-Saxon King Alfred the Great (849-899 BCE) invented candle clocks to manage the twenty-four hours of the day, no matter whether the sun was shining or not. The candles had hour marks on them and, every time they burned down to a marker, another hour had passed. With the help of his candle clocks, King Alfred successfully divided his day into 8 hours of rest, 8 hours of work, and 8 hours of reading, writing, and prayer. The class also started working on a calendar for 2022. For each month, the students draw a calendar grid without using rulers. Then they determine the number of days in the month and figure out where to enter the days of the month into the grid.
During the week, the third-graders went out on the farm with Ki Rachel, no matter what weather we had. After finishing their farm chores on Friday, the students found a tire in the ground and dug out the entire tire. In Music, Ki Kathee has started practicing lantern walk songs with our class. During our painting lesson, the students painted jack o’ lanterns which they took home on Friday.
