Second Grade: October 25 - 29

Dear Second-Grade Parents,

This week, the second-graders started exploring the times tables through geometry. As a warm-up, they placed an equilateral triangle into a circle with 12 evenly spaced points. Before they drew it into their main lesson books, they made the triangle on a wooden board by wrapping yarn around 12 circular arranged nails. They did the same with two triangles, creating a six-pointed star. The ultimate challenge was to place four equilateral triangles into the circle. Each student had a chance to wrap the yarn around the nails, and the class was astonished to see the resulting 12-pointed star emerge. When the students realized they had to put the stars on paper into their main lesson book, their eyes gleamed, and all rose to the challenge.

During Environmental Education, the second-graders grabbed some buckets, fishing nets, and magnifying glasses, and went onto our newly renovated boardwalk with Ki Rachel to look at macroinvertebrates like dragonfly larva, damselfly larva, water striders, and boatmen. Ki Kathee has started practicing lantern walk songs with our class.  During our painting lesson, the class painted jack o’ lanterns which they took home on Friday.
