Third Grade: March 15 - 19

The third-grade class continued working with money this past week.  We learned how paper money is made and created individual summaries about this process. The students spent time drawing bills in their main lesson books and in the process discovered the incredible amount of detail on each denomination. Each student was then given sheets of bills to cut out and count. All told, each student now is $1152 richer! They certainly loved the prospect of that!  We finished out the week using our bills and coins to count out specific amounts of money and, when doing so, tried to use the fewest amount of bills and coins possible. If you have games that involve counting money (Monopoly, friendly poker, etc.), please take some time to play together. Shopping together is another great way to help your child practice counting and adding money. Next week, during the final week of our Money block, we will be adding and subtracting various amounts of money as we shop at a pretend store  The students will create their own items to sell using supplies we have on hand.

We will begin working on our class auction project in the coming weeks. Our class will focus on a garden theme as much of our third grade school year focuses on our school garden. Please be on the lookout for opportunities to help out in and out of class. Candace (a.k.a. Major’s mom) is leading us through this project and may put out a call for volunteers.  It is an exciting step to take forward as a school, and we greatly appreciate all your support.  Please plan to attend our auction event Friday, April 16th.  Donations for goods and services are also appreciated.

With gratitude,

Melissa
