Third & Fourth Grade: August 10 - 13

Dear Third and Fourth-Grade parents,

Last week, we had a great beginning of the school year. Thank you to all who could come in person to our meet and greet last Tuesday. Seeing so many familiar faces and welcoming our new families to our class after the summer break was beautiful. We attended the festive Rose Ceremony for the rising first graders on Wednesday. Who could have guessed that there were four siblings of students in our class who entered first grade? Jaxon’s brother, Austin, Luca’s sister, Stella, Lochlan’s sister, Sylvie, and Jiyah’s brother Sammy moved from Kindergarten into Ki Cole’s first grade. Congratulations!

We began our first math block in the first three days of school, concentrating on measurement and the Hebrew Creation stories. Since the Seven days of Creation coincide with the beginning of time, we talked about the seasons, the months, weeks, and days in relation to the year. The students learned how to tell the number of days in a specific month. Working in teams, they determined the leap years of the first century of our time (hint: all multiples of 4) and looked for patterns in the number sequence. The students also received an extra math challenge. Please do not help your child to solve this or any other challenges. Each student figures out the math challenges on their own time, and they can be very proud when they do. They have so much fun when they figure out the answers by themselves!

The students also had their first Spanish lessons with Ki Maria and classes with Teacher Matan, who is our new Farming and Environmental Education teacher. The best day of the week was Friday when the class enjoyed the afternoon at the creek! The weather was hot, and splashing in the creek felt so good!

Please make sure your child comes to school on time each day! Every day, there are many varied activities, and regardless of the weather, having two full water bottles and wearing proper footwear and clothing is essential. Make sure to read this newsletter every week. It is our primary means of communication about upcoming events and what we learn in class.

Reminders:

  • Saturday, August 27, our class hosts Community Workday.

  • Wednesday, September 7, is Parent night for the third and fourth grades!

Please plan to attend both events!

I am looking forward to working with all of you this year.

Warm regards,

Gaby Farrokhi
