Dear Fifth Grade Families,
We had a week full of learning and fun together! This past Wednesday, the class completed a block with Ki Kathee that focused on the state of Georgia and ended with students adding a map drawing of Georgia and its major rivers into their main lesson books. We will learn even more about Georgia and the Southeast during our North American Geography block later in the year.
On Thursday, we began our first Geometry block. To begin our block, we used our imagination to grasp the idea that a point has no dimension at all! We also learned that in Geometry, a line has only length and goes on forever in its existence! Together, we built these images pictorially, and in addition, we practice drawing many colorful straight lines. We will continue this week, reinforcing concepts about points and lines, meeting some well-known ancient mathematicians, and learning even more about triangles.
The students enjoyed all their specialty classes last week as well. In their foreign language classes, students are focusing on reading and writing in both languages. In Woodworking, the class began making coat hooks for their newly established outdoor classroom while in EE they began building a pizza oven from clay (you read that right!). In Music, they are singing, dancing and learning more about reading and writing music, and in Handwork, students made a set of double-pointed needles for knitting socks this year.
Reminders:
-Wednesday, September 7th is Parent night for second grade, adults only, please.
-Saturday, August 27 is a Community Workday.
With gratitude,
Melissa
