Fifth Grade: August 22-26

Dear Fifth Grade Families,

The class enjoyed another full week of learning and fun in the forest.  We are well into our first Geometry block.  We had more lessons around points, lines, and line segments as well as learning more about a variety of triangles, including the 3, 4, 5 triangle which was used in ancient times for accurate measurement.  We also learned a bit about Euclid, the Greek mathematician best known for his treatise on geometry (a.k.a the first math textbook!).  We have drawn colorful and interesting geometric designs during these lessons as well, a practice that helps the students apply and absorb various concepts more deeply.

The students brought home their first spelling list this past Thursday.  Most weeks of the school year, the students will be given a list of words that are reflective of our current block or words that are being commonly misspelled in class.  On Tuesdays, we will have a spelling quiz.  Defining the words and using them correctly in a sentence will also be a part of these lessons and should be supported at home.  I will post the list each week. Please help your child establish good study habits from the beginning so they come to school prepared and experience success. Success begets motivation!
