First Grade: August 22-26

Hello First Grade Families,

We have had another full week of learning and fun as we continue to enjoy and explore working together as a class. The class has made steady progress in learning our daily rhythms.  The students are already doing well working together and listening respectfully to each other.

This past week we began our first Language block of the year.  In First grade in Waldorf Education, the children journey through the alphabet letter-by-letter through a variety of stories.  All children, regardless of their current skills, benefit from these vivid, pictorial lessons that build their capacity for imagination and build memory through recapitulation.  Students work on developing proper pencil grip and letter formation and dive into phonetic learning through writing and drawing. Each of the letters will be introduced and incorporated into our story of a Prince on a journey to become a king.  Woven through the Prince’s own adventures are a variety of traditional fairy tales.  Using these stories, we draw characters using the letters to create either characters or settings for our story.  The students use their creativity while learning the letters which gives more depth to each experience.

This week, we will continue traveling with the Prince as we introduce additional letters.   They will continue their own journeys in their specialty classes such as Handwork, Foreign Language, Environmental Education, and more.
