Hello First Grade families,
Our Day of Courage festival was a fun and exciting time had by all! Our class strung beautiful bracelets with red and gold gems as a gift for the second grade class to help them as they took a turn, one by one, entering the dragon’s lair to collect a crystal. We all watched with a feeling of awe and joy and we look forward to our part in the festival next year as second graders, and facing the (imaginary) dragon ourselves! Students from Academe of the Oaks, the Waldorf high school located in Decatur, lead mixed age groups of grade students through a variety of fun games to round out a truly magical and fun Day of Courage!
This week we continued working on numbers in our number block. As we add each new number, we continue to learn their significance to us and the world around us. For example, we talked about how there is only one “you” or “self” and there is only one planet earth. This approach will be used for all the numbers we learn. In this way, using pictorial images and stories, the numbers have more significance to the students and the information is better retained. We have so far worked on the numbers 1, 2, and 3.
When we return from Fall break, we will continue our numbers block. We will move on and begin working with numbers 4, 5, and 6. Along with meeting each number, we practice numeral formation, as well as seeing the various ways we can build each number such as (1,4), (2,3), (2,2,1) for five, and bringing in the concepts of addition and subtraction. Additionally, we will experience a shift to fall weather. Please send your child to school dressed in layers, as it can become chilly in the mornings! Your child may bring a small blanket to school if desired. Bringing rain boots to school is essential.
Wishing a restful Fall Break for all of you and looking forward to getting back to work the following week.
