Dear Fourth and Fifth Grade Families,
I hope you have had a relaxing break week. Fall is now officially here, and the students can all enjoy this golden time of the year at the Garden School.
Before the break, the class celebrated the Day of Courage with the grades. In the weeks leading up to the festival, the students had made wooden shields with Mr. Matan, which they had designed, cut, sanded, and decorated all by themselves. On the Day of Courage, the students presented the shields to the second-graders to give them courage for their symbolic encounter with the dragon in the forest. The second-graders enjoyed receiving the meaningful gifts and felt empowered by the strong support from the student community. Then, the grade students participated in a variety of games. The fourth and fifth graders enjoyed facing different challenges in mixed-grade groups. It was nice to see the children teaming up with students from the other grades in the community-building games.
As the class moves into October, the students will continue their fractions math block for another two weeks. During this block, the students hear stories from the Kalevala, an epic collection of Finnish legends, before we return to our second block on the Norse Gods.
As the temperatures change and the students spend time outdoors in the morning, please ensure your child comes to school dressed in layers. Sweaters and jackets are recommended for the cooler morning hours.
