Third Grade: September 18-22, 2023

Dear Third Grade Families,

This past week, our class began the third block of the year-Language Arts. In this block, in addition to reviewing material previously introduced,  the students will learn about nouns, verbs, adverbs, and adjectives. Nouns (naming words) were the focus of the first week. The students worked on listing nouns around the classroom, the campus, and anywhere nouns are found. Word families (i.e. bland, sand, grand) were re-introduced and will be part of the children’s weekly vocabulary/spelling homework. The students also reviewed consonant and vowel sounds and consonant blends (bl, st, str, etc.).

There was much excitement as we began journaling. Each child received a journal and, twice a week, will work on writing skills as the students write independently based on a journal prompt. This exercise helps the students work on sentence structure, vocabulary, and creativity in an engaging manner. The journal entry also includes an opportunity to draw a picture for each entry. In this way, all students can engage with the process as they build their writing stamina.

The Day of Courage was again a lovely time for the Second Grade class, as our class remembered last year when they were in that role. In addition to sanding and polishing the wooden swords they “find” in the forest, each student in second grade receives a handmade gift from students in another class to help them ready themselves to meet the metaphorical dragon within the cave. This year, our class presented beautiful gold crowns that they finger-knitted with Ki Ieva. It was a beautiful day, the weather was perfect, the children sang beautifully, and they held space for the Second Grade class as they made their courageous journey to the cave and faced their metaphorical dragons.
