Hello Second Grade Families:
The week before break was the last week of our first math block. We used various games and techniques to work on all of our math skills. In particular, we had a guest Waldorf teacher that spent time guiding the students in using clay to practice a variety of math skills. We used the clay to make “cherry seeds” and we then used these “seeds” for working on odd/even concepts, counting, adding, subtracting and dividing. We continued to use the clay to create a farm starting with the ground, rain marks in the ground, rocks and trees. The students used their creativity and fine motor skills in following the instructions provided, all while reinforcing math skills. Combining artistic and sensory experiences with academic skills helps to deepen the students' engagement with their lessons and makes a lasting impression for our students.
Learning to read through writing is valuable for children as often writing skills lag behind reading skills. This week, we are back to our language block and will be focusing on capitalization and the punctuation mark that ends a majority of our sentences, the “period.” As we learn this punctuation mark, we will naturally focus on capitalizing the first letter of the first word in the next sentence. We will continue to practice reading, spelling, and forming sentences as we write summaries together based on the stories we are hearing in class..
Hopefully everyone had a great Fall Break and enjoyed their time together. Before the Break, we were able to have our first fire of the school year and now that the cool mornings will be here to stay, we will certainly start more of our days with the extra warmth from our fire.
