Fourth and Fifth Grade: October 17 - 20, 2023

Dear Fourth and Fifth Grade Families,

It was great to see you all last Saturday at the Kingdom of Halloween. The Kingdom of Halloween, with its Fairytale Walk in the Forest, the different activity booths, and the families, all dressed up in fantastic costumes, is truly one-of-a-kind. Thank you to all who have helped out at our leather craft booth and to all who have come to experience this magical festival at the Garden School. Fall is a busy season. The next volunteer opportunity for class parents will be the Thanksgiving Luncheon on November 17, hosted by our class in partnership with Third Grade.

Last week, our class explored more stories from Norse Mythology. They learned about the rising conflict between the Aesir and Vanir gods, a foreboding of Ragnarök, the Twilight of the Gods. The students learned how a wall was built around Asgard, and Odin came to own his eight-legged steed, Sleipnir, "the best horse among gods and men," according to Norse poetry. In grammar, the students looked closely at adjectives that describe nouns. In one activity, the students enjoyed finding as many adjectives as possible to describe an elephant's trunk and collecting them on the board. Creative brainstorming exercises like this are tools to enliven any writing assignment with colorful adjectives, and the students used this method the week to vividly describe a scary Halloween monster.

The class also talked about our upcoming book report. The students will pick a fictional chapter book of a suitable reading level for them, which they can read in less than two weeks. The main characters in the book should be at most three years older than the student. We will work on the book report over several weeks. Please use this week to take your child to the library to choose a book. The students can make book suggestions anytime between now and Monday, October 30. The teacher must approve the books before the students begin reading and working on their book reports in class.
