Hello Second Grade Families,
Last week, we were busy working on our third Language Block. We heard a story called The Old Lion and the Fox. We also worked on various word families such as “-at,” “-ap,” “-ag,” “-an,” “-ed,” “-en,” “-et,” and “-in.” Once a student can pronounce the root of a word family, they can then sound out words that use the particular word family. Word families and memorizing frequently seen sight words work together to help children move toward becoming independent readers. As the students practiced word families, we drew pictures to accompany the new words learned. We created lists of all the words we learned for each word family. The students also wrote the name of the picture, allowing them to write out word family words themselves. The class played a new game called “Shooting Star” to reinforce some of the new material. This game required the students to guess a word with missing letters before the star became a “shooting star.”
This week, we are increasing our list of word families to include “-ock,” “-og,” “-op,” “-ot,” “-ub,” “-ut,” and “-un”. For added fun, we will use items the students find while exploring the forest to give us new words to spell. For every forest discovery, we will work together to spell that item. Our class will also be hearing the story The Tortoise and The Eagle. They are working hard and learning a lot of new material.
This week, we will also hold our Winter Spiral on Thursday. Walking the spiral with a lighted candle is symbolic of each of us sharing our light with the world and how together we can help guide each other through the dark. Our walk will begin promptly at 11:00 a.m. in the sanctuary. Families are welcome to watch their child’s class walk the spiral.
