Hello First Grade Families:
Last week we were busy wrapping up our language block. We read a story about Briar Rose and then drew a picture of her sleeping in her bed with her spinning wheel in the room and with fairies in the air. We then had to write a sentence summarizing the story. The students put a lot of good, hard work into their final product.
Reading skills naturally arise when children spend time writing. Opportunities to write about a story they enjoy increases their interest in the process while helping them develop letter-sound connections and also practice writing sight words. Please help support your child’s learning by practicing sight word memorization with them at home. Playing games using sight words is an ideal way to practice, such as sight word bingo or making a matching game using index cards. Two possible sight word lists are the Dolch or Fry sight word lists, both of which can be found online.
We are now back in a math block and will be working on multiplication and division. During this math block, we will use manipulatives, games, stories, and exploration to help learn these new concepts.
It was good to have everyone back in school. The students readily settled in and got back to work and play.
