Hello, Second Grade Families,
Last week, we began our new math block by revisiting place values and reinforcing the concepts previously learned. The class then heard a story about an adventure of finding lost books. As a class, we used the story as a springboard and imagined that the gems we had in our classroom were lost books that had been found. We then used our place value mats to sort and count our imaginary books, and the gems were placed in the appropriate columns of the place value mats (ones, tens, hundreds). Last week, the class also worked on the times tables and showed great excitement to learn as many new multiplication facts as possible. Memorizing math facts is the key to success when working with higher-level math processes; their enthusiasm will help them achieve this important mathematical foundation.
This week, we are continuing to work on our place values and will utilize more stories to incorporate into our math facts. We will continue working on multiplication while adding work on division to our tasks. The class will hear stories about kings sharing their treasures with their kingdoms and a grumpy crab sharing shells in the sea. These stories will help visualize the division facts we are learning.
The class is showing great excitement to be back in school after the December break. Each of the students has been ready to learn despite the fact we have not been able to be outdoors much. They are quite adaptable and have consistently shown an interest in doing their best work. Way to grow, Second grade!
