Hello, Second Grade Families,
Last week, the class began their new Math Block by hearing a story about a dog with so many bones to chew that he became overwhelmed by how many he had. The dog decided to organize his bones into groups of nine to help manage the task of getting all of those bones chewed. We used this story to help us work on our multiplication and division skills using our math facts that use 9. This story was also a springboard to review place values as we helped the dog organize his bones into bowls, dog houses, and holes in the backyard. The class also created a fun math tool, a paper person who gets taller by having his feet pulled. As the feet are pulled through the person’s body, new math facts are revealed.
This week, the class will continue with our multiplication and division. Hearing new stories will help create interesting and creative ways to aid in learning new math facts. We also plan to get creative and make a math fish. Now that we are able to be outside more, we will get to utilize math hopscotch again.
The class works hard on math and loves to work on perfecting their math skills. Everyone really seems excited to learn math through stories and our class activities. As we are coming to the end of winter, the class is starting to get excited about being outside once again. It has been fun to see the changes that the approach of Spring is bringing.
