Kindergarten Turtles: October 11 - 15

Greetings Turtle Families!

We enjoyed observing signs of fall this week in our forest classroom.  The leaves are colorful and crunching beneath our feet, there are furry caterpillars crawling about, and we have replaced our Wednesday creek days with time at the farm.  Ki Rachel, our farming teacher, greeted us in the garden on Wednesday and led the Turtles in some purposeful, practical work.  We used hand shovels to dig and collect rocks from the garden beds to help prepare the soil for planting.  Grubs were collected in a second bucket to be fed to our school chickens.  We observed the donkeys and goats as well and next week we will pick some kudzu along the forest trail to feed them.

On Friday, the children brought nature wands home, which we enjoyed creating with wool roving.  We talked about how the wool came from sheep, which was then dyed in many pretty colors to be used for crafting.  The children were able to exercise fine motor skills as they pulled the wool into fine strands and wrapped it firmly but gently around their sticks.  Next, we will try wet felting soap, which is a fun and different way to experience this wonderful, natural material.

Thank you so much for contributing items to our Turtle Scarecrow!  I am so excited to spend time together assembling it on Wednesday!

Reminders:

  • Conferences are this week! Zoom links for those who requested virtual meetings will be sent on Monday evening.

  • When you arrive on Wednesday to assemble the scarecrow, please meet Ki Lesley at the picnic tables for screening prior to walking down to the forest.

Kindly,

Ki Amy
