First Grade: October 10-14, 2022

Hello First Grade families,

It was great meeting with each student’s parents this past week. I enjoyed our first round of parent conferences and look forward to continuing to play and learn together as a class. Thank you!

This week we continued our numbers block and learned the numbers five, six and seven. We began by observing our five fingers on each hand, five toes on each foot, and using our five senses.  We then turned our attention to the stars in the sky that look as if they had five points. For the number six, we found a lot of things from our daily lives and environment.  For example, we discussed that half a dozen eggs equal six eggs and insects (ants, flies, and butterflies) have six legs.  Finally, we talked about seven.  For this number we talked about the seven days in a week and the seven colors in the rainbow. We also started learning the days of the week and months of the year.

Next week we will learn the numbers eight, nine, and ten as we look at how these numbers apply to us and why they are so important. We will continue learning the days of the week and months of the year along with movement.  Learning while moving helps us to make many body/brain connections and helps solidify connections with memory skills as well.

The cool weather has been nice but it has been even nicer to have a little warm up around our class fire to get everyone ready for the day.  While we have been very fortunate with such beautiful weather, please watch the weather reports and send your child in the needed clothing.  They should always have warm clothes available regardless of their personal preference while dressing for school.  Often, once settled in at school, they will need to add or remove additional layers.

Our Kingdom of Halloween festival is just around the corner! In addition to our beautiful fairy tale walk in our forest, we will have crafts, food and vendors set up in the field. Please invite guests from your community to attend! This is an excellent opportunity for your child to use their imagination and make their own costume to wear to our festival. Be inventive and use what you already have at home! Please remember: no masks or marketed characters. Finally, please sign up to help out that night.  Your volunteer participation is necessary (and expected:) for our Kingdom of Halloween festival’s success. Our class is responsible for running the jump rope machines.  Please be on the lookout for the sign-up and training session information from our class rep!  Thank you.
