First Grade September 12-16

Hello First Grade Families,

This past week we continued the Prince’s journey. One new main character we came across was a bear and her cubs which allowed us to introduce the letter “B.”  The other new main character we met was a deer and her fawn which allowed us to introduce the letter “F”  as well. The deer and her fawn were by a stream of water and so we also learned the letter “R” by drawing our characters rappelling off a rockface. We are very adventurous in first grade!

This week we will begin our first math block of the school year as we focus on the qualities of numbers 1-12. Beginning with the number 1, we will move, speak, and draw about each number and how it applies to us as individuals and the world around us. We will move numerically along, developing a deeper connection to the feeling life of each number (some examples are one sun and one moon, two hands and two feet, etc.).  In a Waldorf-inspired math education, the students will learn all math facts 1-12 over the next few years until memorized. This gentle and imaginative beginning brings numeric understanding in a specialized and unique manner.

Remember to send your students wearing red or gold this Friday! Please let me know if your child needs help sourcing a red or yellow/gold shirt by the end of day Tuesday. If you have extras, please let us know so we can share them with others who may not have found a source readily. Regardless of shirt color, all students will be participating in the Day of Courage activities!
