Hello First Grade Families,
Last week we did many drawings to help reinforce the multiplication facts we were learning. For example, we drew birds in a tree and learned that if two trees each have three birds then there are in total six birds (2 x 3=6). We also drew mining wagons with gems and baskets of corn. In each drawing, we used a different combination of items for different math problems. We altered the math problems as we altered our drawings. Bringing these mathematical experiences through the arts helps students engage more deeply in a new way with their multiplication facts and helps to meet a variety of learning styles.
Next week, we will learn new math equations and will continue to use our artwork to help introduce and reinforce the concepts. We will also spend time working on our play which will certainly be entertaining.
It was a busy week and the students did well staying on task throughout their various activities even through our unexpected cold snap. Sending students in with the proper gear helps them to stay warm and happy! Please continue to watch the weather reports as “spring” is in full swing Georgia-style! Additionally, playing math games while at home, reinforces the concepts being learned at school and is encouraged. Please help your children practice their math facts and also help them to remember to work on their part in our play.
