Hello First Grade Families,
Last week we used new methods to help reinforce our multiplication facts. One new technique was the dot method. For example, for the problem "4 x 3 = 12" we made 4 rows of 3 dots in each row to help us find the answer. We also read a story about an old woman who was not afraid. We found ways in the story to help us create different multiplication problems. Additionally, we used clay as a manipulative to help us create different number groupings and then solve the multiplication problem.
This week we will spend time learning about and practicing division. We will continue to use different manipulatives and drawings to help introduce and reinforce the math problems. We will also read about the twelve dancing princesses. Many of our lessons are woven through stories which help the lessons live more deeply in the children. The number twelve from our story is an amount that divides readily by 2, 3, 4, and 6 lending itself perfectly to our introduction to division.
If you haven’t yet, please send me an email to RSVP with the number of guests, and their names, who will be attending the Grandfriends Tea on March 31st.
