Kindergarten River Otters: April 17-21, 2023

Osiyo, River Otter families,

This Friday is our annual fundraiser!  We are so excited and we hope to see you all (adults only, please). Thank you for your participation in our class auction project and thank you for your continuous support of our school!

What an exciting week in the River Otter class!  We had our first visit to the creek and played in the sand. We held chickens in the garden. We played a magical game on our pet dragons. We had special bird visitors. Thursday afternoon, a pair of Carolina Wrens were landing on our platform and backpacks during lunch. When we investigated after rest time, we discovered the pair in a student’s backpack making a nest!  We keep our backpacks zipped now, so we don’t mistakenly bring a feathered friend home. We are so fortunate to experience these delights of spring!

This week was yarn week.  Some students strengthened their skills with finger chaining. Other students continued working on sanding our new cutting boards to be smooth enough to finish with beeswax. We had the opportunity to paint with all three colors, and Tippy ate strawberries along the creek, in the sunshine. The students’ control of the paintbrush and comfort in exploring color in different ways has grown tremendously this year. We will continue using all three paint colors (red, blue, and yellow) for the rest of the school year. If your child is interested in painting or sewing at home and you would like resources or links to the materials we use in the classroom, please email me and I will happily share that with you.

Announcements and Reminders:

  • Spring items to bring each day: 2 full water bottles (1 is ok for half day), full change of clothing, rain gear, creek shoes, insect repellant, sun hat, and a light blanket if your child would like one for rest time.

  • With the warmer weather, please continue to ensure your child wears socks and closed-toed and heeled, hard-soled shoes to school. As we often use larger, heavier materials such as rocks and logs and engage in activities such as woodworking, foot protection is extremely important.
