Kindergarten River Otters: May 15-19, 2023

Osiyo, River Otter families,

We had an amazing last week of forest kindergarten for the year! On Monday and Tuesday, students shared some of their favorite stuffed animals, who joined us for snack and rest time. Monday also brought time to play in the creek, and on Tuesday we visited the farm, where we played with our friends from the Joyful Beginnings class and saw the school’s three new chickens. Wednesday was field day, and we enjoyed practicing skills and having fun as we participated in bean bag toss, bowling, sponge and water relay, and parachute games. We also enjoyed popsicles and best of all, every student, regardless of what days they typically attend, were together for the entire morning. On Thursday, we squeezed lemons and made our own delicious lemonade, and on Friday we had a special play and enjoyed fresh watermelon slices. We also had a small special ceremony on Friday for our Golden Knights, who will be moving on to first grade next year.

Thank you all, students and families, for a magical 2022/23 school year in the River Otter kindergarten class. We all learned and grew so much together, and I will forever cherish the love and lessons each of your children shared with me, and with each other. Whether you are returning to kindergarten or first grade at The Garden School next year or beginning a new adventure, we will always be part of each other.

Please look out for your child’s End of Year Report to arrive in your email mid-June. If your child is attending The Garden School kindergarten program next year, the welcome letter from your child’s teacher will be emailed to you on June 12th.

Kindergarten River Otters: May 8-12, 2023

Osiyo, River Otter families.

THANK YOU everyone for the lovely gestures during Teacher Appreciation week. It is such a joy to spend the school year with your children, and be a part of their lives and yours.

We had so much fun creating and exploring in the forest this week. On Monday and Tuesday, students made sculptures and other creations out of mud. We placed a log in a special, sunny spot for them to dry safely, and the students were excited to check on them each day and inspect whether they were ready to take home or ready to use to decorate our class area. On Thursday, we visited the creek and played in the sand and water. Students found several beautiful rocks and gems, and even some small clams. A couple of students dug in the sand deep enough to reach water! On Tuesday, we visited the farm and had the opportunity to spend some time playing with our friends in First Grade. This week we saw several animal friends, including a rat snake, a garter snake, a blue heron, turtles, and lizards. They are enjoying the warm forest as much as we are!

The last week of school will be filled with fun activities and enjoying each others’ company. As a reminder, there is NO SHARED SNACK this week, and our activity schedule for the last week is as follows:

MONDAY: Bring your favorite stuffed animal

TUESDAY: Bring your favorite stuffed animal

WEDNESDAY: Field day (T/Th students welcome 8:45-12:30)

THURSDAY: Making homemade lemonade

FRIDAY: Watermelon

We are looking forward to this special time together, as well as a brief celebration of our Golden Knights, who will be moving on to first grade at the end of the school year. Please make sure to send water shoes and a change of clothing each day, as we will visit the creek as often as possible.

Kindergarten River Otters: May 8-12, 2023

Osiyo, River Otter families.

The River Otter class enjoyed a week of artistic and practical work and of building and inventing in the forest. The students were able to wedge a tire between two trees and used that as the base for a treehouse. They also used mud and sticks to build a volcano, and made small toy dinosaurs from sticks and yarn. On Wednesday afternoon, we got to take a special trip to the big playground! Students enjoyed the tire swing, practiced going across the monkey bars, climbed the big climbing dome, and worked together riding the teeter totters. Tuesday was farm day when  we had the opportunity to play with some of the younger students in the Joyful Beginnings class at the farm. Together, they climbed and jumped like goats, and pet the donkeys.

Our last morning circle of the school year is about spring, and welcoming the sun and the return of our animal friends. We are building our proprioceptive and vestibular senses, memory, and ability to cross different midlines by crouching, jumping, walking and spinning in circles, walking in and out of the circle, changing directions quickly, and moving our bodies in a variety of directions. One of our favorite songs in this circle is a beautiful traditional Waldorf melody with the following lyrics:

Good morning, Brother Sunshine,

Good morning, Sister Moon.

I beg your humble pardon,

I’ve got my hat, I’ll be there soon.

I thought I heard you laughing,

To shut you out I would not do.

My heart is standing open,

Won’t you come right through.

Kindergarten River Otters: April 24-28, 2023

Osiyo, River Otter families,

THANK YOU to everyone for helping make our annual fundraiser a success!  From helping with the class project, volunteering for the event, coming to the auction, and inviting others, we couldn’t have done it without you.

Our class has been hard at work building simple machines and creating businesses. When a group of students was looking for a way to keep their favorite rocks (“gems”) safe, we built a pulley system. Students explored different types of pulleys, as well as ways to make the pulley more successful. By the end of the week, we had two different pulleys in the outdoor classroom. The first gem-collecting group inspired others to search for their own special gems, which they used to open a gem shop in their large fort. Students made a window in the side of the fort, created signs with paper and crayons, and accepted other nature treasures in exchange for special gems.

When Thunder moved us indoors on Thursday afternoon, students decided to start a different business in the indoor classroom. Our new, soon-to-be redecorated puppet stand became a library and fruit stand. Students came to the window to check out one of our books, or to purchase some of our cloth play fruit. This was a popular endeavor, and students especially enjoyed checking out library books. We also beaded necklaces, modeled with beeswax, and drew with chalk. Later in the day, we enjoyed sliding down the wet slide in our rain gear, and into the mud below. It was like our very own waterslide!

Kindergarten River Otters: April 17-21, 2023

Osiyo, River Otter families,

This Friday is our annual fundraiser!  We are so excited and we hope to see you all (adults only, please). Thank you for your participation in our class auction project and thank you for your continuous support of our school!

What an exciting week in the River Otter class!  We had our first visit to the creek and played in the sand. We held chickens in the garden. We played a magical game on our pet dragons. We had special bird visitors. Thursday afternoon, a pair of Carolina Wrens were landing on our platform and backpacks during lunch. When we investigated after rest time, we discovered the pair in a student’s backpack making a nest!  We keep our backpacks zipped now, so we don’t mistakenly bring a feathered friend home. We are so fortunate to experience these delights of spring!

This week was yarn week.  Some students strengthened their skills with finger chaining. Other students continued working on sanding our new cutting boards to be smooth enough to finish with beeswax. We had the opportunity to paint with all three colors, and Tippy ate strawberries along the creek, in the sunshine. The students’ control of the paintbrush and comfort in exploring color in different ways has grown tremendously this year. We will continue using all three paint colors (red, blue, and yellow) for the rest of the school year. If your child is interested in painting or sewing at home and you would like resources or links to the materials we use in the classroom, please email me and I will happily share that with you.

Announcements and Reminders:

  • Spring items to bring each day: 2 full water bottles (1 is ok for half day), full change of clothing, rain gear, creek shoes, insect repellant, sun hat, and a light blanket if your child would like one for rest time.

  • With the warmer weather, please continue to ensure your child wears socks and closed-toed and heeled, hard-soled shoes to school. As we often use larger, heavier materials such as rocks and logs and engage in activities such as woodworking, foot protection is extremely important.

  • 4/25-4/27 5th Grade Pentathlon

  • 4/28 Annual Fundraiser - Half Day

  • 4/29 Community Work Day

  • 5/5 Half Day

Kindergarten River Otters: April 10-14, 2023

Osiyo, River Otter families.

How wonderful to have everyone back from spring break!  The class enjoyed the spring weather and our new spring circle. We finished hearing the story we started before the break, about Eostre, the Germanic goddess of spring, and a magic rabbit.  A little girl found a frozen bird, who had returned before Eostre brought spring to the village. The girl’s love for the bird convinced the goddess to save it, and though she could not return it to life as a bird, she transformed it into a bunny that would live forever. The magic bunny could not stay on Earth, so Eostre made a home on the moon. The girl and bunny loved each other so much, Eostre agreed to allow the bunny to return once a year when she came to bring spring to the village. The bunny could play in the forest, check on the girl, and leave her a gift each year. Because the magic bunny used to be a bird, it left special rainbow eggs in the forest for the girl, and as she grew older, for her children and grandchildren. And if things have not changed, they are still the same today. On Friday (or Thursday for two-day students), students found a special surprise in their wheatgrass, which they were able to take home with them.

An extra big thank you to the families who have been hard at work planning, gathering, building, and sewing for our amazing auction project. We are so excited about this project! On Tuesday and Wednesday, students painted the peg dolls that will go with the beautiful houses. This activity took more targeted fine motor control than our usual painting, as we used smaller paint brushes and worked to cover the smaller, cylindrical areas of the doll bodies. Students were excited to be part of the auction project and proud that they each contributed to this special set.

Announcements and Reminders:

  • Bring EVERY day:

    • Warm coat–spring mornings are cool in the woods

Kindergarten River Otters: March 27-31, 2023

Osiyo, River Otter families.

The River Otter class enjoyed a beautiful week in the sunny forest. Our wheatgrass is beginning to grow and our tulips are blooming. When we return from break, we should have enough mint in our garden to make our own tea! The wheatgrass needs some more time before it is ready to take home; it will have time to grow over break and students will take it home, with a special surprise, shortly after we return to school.

This week we experienced the color indigo in different and beautiful ways. Our class had the opportunity to dye silk capes in indigo dye Ki Ieava prepared for us. On Tuesday,  students put the silk into the dye and stirred it with a rod. On Wednesday, they watched the silks get rinsed and hung to dry and observed as they changed to a beautiful light blue. Each student took a silk home later in the week. On Tuesday, we also had butterfly pea flower tea. The students observed as clear, hot water was poured over the dried flowers into a clear teapot. The tea turned a lovely blue, much to their delight. Students had the tea in their teacups, and as it cooled it turned a deeper purple. The tea was also delicious, and everyone agreed we should have it again soon!  On Wednesday we discovered our own shades of purple as Tippy the paintbrush played with her friends blue and red among the flowers and the clear sky.

Kindergarten River Otters: March 20-24, 2023

Osiyo, River Otter families.

Happy Spring! This week we enjoyed special activities to help us welcome this new season of growth, color, and light. On Tuesday, the first day of spring, students helped transplant tulips in a planter to brighten up our forest garden. We could see the bulbs in the soil, and it was wonderful to watch students observe and connect that different types of plants grow from different types of seeds. On Wednesday and Thursday, students received their own seed pots. They followed directions to plant several wheat grass seeds, and learned that different seeds need to be planted differently. Wheat grass seeds need to be sprinkled on top of soil with a thin layer of additional soil sprinkled over them, which is different from other seeds and plants we have planted in our garden. The students will continue to care for their wheat grass, which grows quickly. They will bring their pots of grass home before Spring Break. We also enjoyed Doce Flores (12 flowers) tea on Monday and Tuesday.

This is our final week of our early spring circle; when we return from spring break we will have all new songs and verses!  This circle has followed little squirrel through a morning of adventures on The Garden School campus. We have focused on moving our bodies in different directions, building our vestibular, proprioceptive, and balance senses, and on impulse control by waiting for different animals to be woken from winter by a spring raindrop. One of our current circle songs (a student favorite) is below:

Gray squirrel, gray squirrel, swish your bushy tail

Gray squirrel gray squirrel, swish your bushy tail

Put a peanut in your nose, wrinkle up your little toes

Gray squirrel, gray squirrel, swish your bushy tail

(repeat)

Kindergarten River Otters: March 13-17, 2023

Osiyo, River Otter families.

We enjoyed a week of creating and playing at school this week. Students continued working on their digging project, making a waterfall into the deep hole the students dug at the back of our play area. They gathered different size sticks and branches from other parts of the forest to continue building different types of forts and started decorating them with other items they found in nature. We are working on sanding different-sized pieces of wood until they are very smooth. Once this work is done, we will seal them with beeswax and add them to our platform block basket. Students also sewed projects of their choosing, including pockets, dolls, and pillows. We also painted with all three colors this week, as Tippy, our paintbrush, had an adventure with yellow in the sunshine and daffodils, blue in the clear sky and pond, and red in the roses and poppies.

Last week we finished a funny folk tale from Italy about a boy who received a donkey that laid golden coins, a tablecloth that made delicious food, and a stick that chased the innkeeper who had taken his other gifts. The students enjoyed the story very much, and last Friday we acted it out as a play. Students took turns acting out the different characters as the teacher told the story, and some students really had fun getting into characters and acting out their parts!  This week we started the fairy tale The Three Billy Goats Gruff. The students are enjoying this story as much as the last, and some have mentioned having heard it before. Next week, students will have the opportunity to decide whether they would like to have a puppet show of the story or act it out as a play.

Announcements and Reminders:

  • Our day begins at 8:45 am. Please have your student at school by this time, as we begin our rhythm and work immediately following the end of the drop-off period.

Kindergarten River Otters: March 6-10, 2023

Osiyo, River Otter families.

We have had so much fun adventuring in the forest this week! We have a few different types of forts being built and have taken a couple of trips to a big stick pile in the woods to select new building materials to bring back with us. One day, while looking for fort sticks, we found a football in the woods!  The students have really enjoyed playing catch and running and diving for the ball. This is a great way for them to get proprioceptive and vestibular sensory input while also building gross motor and hand-eye coordination skills. Several students also drew treasure maps and worked together to follow them throughout our forest classroom area, looking for buried treasure.

We enjoyed time at the farm and took turns holding our very friendly chicken named Butterscotch. In our classroom garden, our plants from the autumn are really starting to grow! The cabbage, collards, and kale are growing tall, and the mint, lemon balm, and chamomile are all coming back after the cold and heavy rains from the winter. We will soon enjoy herbal tea made from our own garden, and greens we grew in our soup. We will also start peas from seeds in the next week or so, and when they are big enough we will plant them in a bed in the big garden.

Kindergarten River Otters: February 27- March 3, 2023

Osiyo, River Otter families.

Welcome back from mid-winter break!  We were so happy to see everyone back this week, and hope you had a fun, restful break.  This week we took advantage of the warm and dry days and visited the farm on both Tuesday and Wednesday. We found eggs there on both days and enjoyed playing with the chickens, goats, and donkeys. The children also climbed on the big rock, played in the dry, rocky culvert, and looked into the garden where seeds planted by the third grade class will soon be growing.

We are introducing some social-emotional games into our games day, and throughout the week when we have some extra time. This week, we played a game of guessing what others were feeling by the faces and gestures they made. We then talked about and acted out different ways to express each of these emotions appropriately and safely. We learned some different breathing techniques, as all students agreed breathing was a good way to handle a variety of feelings.

We would like to extend a thank you to the Atkinson family and the Queen family for donating gently used, Waldorf-friendly materials for our classroom. The students are enjoying wooden puzzles, wood lacing cards, games, tiny cups, and a variety of new items and activities.

Announcements and Reminders:

  • Please send your child with TWO FULL water bottles every day. Especially as it gets warmer, we drink and need a lot of water.

  • Students will need insect repellant in the coming weeks.

Kindergarten River Otters: February 13 - 17

Osiyo, River Otter families,

It was wonderful to see you all at our conferences! This week we wrapped up our late winter morning circle. When we return from break, we will have a new circle for early spring!  The main part of our last circle was a beautiful verse and singing game created by one of my mentors. This game is about inclusiveness and community and honors the work and life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The words to the verse before and after the game are:

I had a dream, and this is what I saw

We lived in a house that was big enough for all

Where you could be you, and I could be me

Side by side living joyously

I had a dream, and this is what I saw

We lived in a house that was big enough for all

Brothers and sisters and all kinds of friends

Side by side from beginning to end

I had a dream, and this is what I saw

We lived in a house that was big enough for all

Where you could be you, and I could be me

What kind of house could that be?

We had the opportunity to try many different practical and creative work projects this week. We hammered nails, sanded wood blocks, finger-chained necklaces, and wrapped sticks neatly in yarn to create different tools and decorations. We also had a special visit from Mr. Matan and watched him work on making a spoon from a block of wood. Students received a piece of wood from Mr. Matan and were fascinated by his woodworking. They are excited to try it when they get older!

Kindergarten River Otters: January 30- February 3, 2023

Osiyo, River Otter families,

Happy February!  The month started wet, and not too cold to play in the slippery mud. It is beautiful to see how much joy children get from nature in every season. On Thursday, games day, I had a new game planned to share with the students. Their bright and creative minds had another idea. The beauty of Waldorf and forest kindergarten is the opportunity to follow their lead when they are ready to work on different skills. The students wanted to throw rocks into a metal container they hung on a tree in our class area. For safety reasons, we have a specific throwing spot at the edge of our classroom so the rocks will bounce harmlessly into the forest., The students decided to put the container in the throwing area (after some trial and error, they realized surrounding it by rocks would keep it upright) and try to throw rocks into it. The class spent time taking turns standing in a pre-determined spot and each throwing three rocks at a time, as they tried to get them into the container. This game was just what they needed this week, and they created it themselves!

We have regular artistic and handwork activities available on a rotating schedule. These weekly activities are sewing, yarn work, and drawing. This week was sewing week, and several students were interested in this activity. Students made pillows, and dolls, along with small items for their dolls, and practiced stitches on pieces of wool felt. It is exciting to watch students become enthusiastic about activities when allowed to explore and practice them on their own timeline.

Thank you to all of our families who joined us this past Saturday for our All School meeting.  Coming together as a community to support our lovely school is what keeps us strong and helps us grow.

Kindy River Otters: January 23 - 27

Osiyo, River Otter families.

We are settling into the second semester and we have learned our new morning circle and started our second folk tale. This week brought a lot of work and discovery in the forest. Together, the students and teachers problem-solved ways to use our wagon safely. The students agreed that it is a lot of fun to use the wagon to carry objects around our area. They took the wagon around our class area, collected large rocks, and used them to turn a hole they had dug into a mountain. Students worked together in teams to move and carry heavy rocks. They now enjoy climbing the mountain and are using the wagon to carry other nature treasures they find.

On Thursday, there were several blue jay feathers near our classroom. When reminded that nature found at school stays at school, the students again used problem-solving to agree on collecting the feathers in a bucket for a yet-to-be-determined use. Once students could not find any more feathers, they explored the classroom looking for tracks to discover which animals have visited recently and think they may have found dinosaur prints! The opportunity to play freely with loose parts in the forest has provided so many opportunities for us to develop our senses and many important skills, such as large motor, problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills, as well as to experience math and science concepts hands-on. We are thankful for our forest classroom!

Wednesday was a “winds-day”, giving us the opportunity to utilize our indoor classroom for the day. We painted with red to scare away Nian, the monster in the Lunar New Year story we are hearing. We also drew with chalk and crayons, and we modeled with beeswax. Students developed patience and hand strength as they warmed and then worked the wax into many types of people and creatures. We were able to further exercise fine motor skills using yarn, blunt needles, and different types of beads to make necklaces. Students also used materials indoors to build forts, roads, and other structures and enjoyed playing with felt food and metal dishes in the play kitchen, and peg dolls in the wooden castle.

This Saturday, February 4, is our All School Meeting (adults only, please)!  Following our community workday, we ask you to please join us at 12:00 for a faculty-sponsored, complimentary soup bar before we join together to hear about the “State of the School” at 12:30.  As an added incentive, each family represented receives 2 volunteer hours.

We were very busy in the forest this week, and enjoyed a little time indoors, too. We finished our first story of the second semester on Friday, with our very first play!  This semester we will focus on folk and fairy tales from around the world. Some stories will end with a puppet show, and others with students acting out the story in a play. This story was a folk tale from Japan about an old man who took handmade hats to town to sell, hoping to make enough money for rice to enjoy on New Year’s day. Along the way, the man saw six Jizo statues in the cold and snow. He gave one of the five hats he made to each of the statues, and the sixth statue he gave his own hat. When he returned home empty handed, his wife told him he did the right thing, and they didn’t need rice for New Year’s. The story has a happy ending, which your child may want to share with you!

On Tuesday we had a special surprise. We had the opportunity to learn about trains and see some amazing model trains from the Southern Museum in Kennesaw. The students were fascinated by the moving trains. We got to learn hand and whistle signals trains use, and how different types of trains run. After visiting the trains, we had a special drawing prompt for art instead of painting. The students enjoyed the opportunity to use a variety of colors to draw their own imagining of a person, a house, and a tree. These pictures will go home with students next week.

Spring conferences are coming soon! They will be held in person at the school in the afternoons on February 15, 16, and 17. Please sign up for a time here. If there is not an available time that is convenient for you, please email me and we will schedule a different time.

Kindergarten River Otters: January 9-13, 2023

Osiyo, River Otter families.

It was a joy to have students back in school for a full week. We enjoyed a nature walk exploring different parts of the forest, and a trip to the farm where we spent time petting the goats and saw ducks in the wetlands. Our older students enjoyed their first days of Golden Knights, and we had our first rice day! We also got to spend some time indoors building with blocks, cooking and serving food in the play kitchen, and drawing with crayons and chalk. In our outdoor classroom some students worked over several weeks to chop a small dead tree with large sticks and pull it down.  This week they were able to pull off a large part of the tree. They were excited and proud that their hard work and their persistence paid off!

This week we finished our early winter circle, and we will begin a new circle following this long weekend. Our early winter circle was an imaginative story where we pictured and sang about amazing things in our forest classroom. We had King Winter, singing trees, and gnomes chopping trees down and cutting them into firewood. The tree chopping song is a favorite that students look forward to each year. Your child will probably love singing the song and showing you the movements if you ask. The words are below:

We are woodsfolk sawing trees,

Sawing, sawing, sawing trees.

We don’t stop for winter weather

We keep sawing all together.

We are woodsfolk sawing trees,

Sawing, sawing, sawing trees.

The tree falls down with a great big crash!

Now it’s time to take our ax.

We chop and chop with all our might

To make some wood for the fire tonight.

Now we carry our logs along

Singing gaily this merrious song:

Tra-la-la-la-la-la-la

Tra-la-la-la-la-la-la.

We are working, working hard

Chopping firewood in our yard.

Hold the handle, hold it tight.

Lift it high with all your might.

Chopping, chopping, chop chop chop

Merrily the pieces drop.

It’s the finest game we know,

It keeps us warm from head to toe.

Now a bundle we will tie

And put it in the shed to dry.

Chopping, chopping, chop chop chop

Merrily the pieces drop.

Mark the date: February 4th is our All School meeting, please see the Main Messenger for more information . This is an event for our entire community and all families are asked to attend. We share in a soup bar, compliments of our faculty and staff, and focus on the State of the School. Please mark your calendars and plan to join us!

Announcements and Reminders

  • Please send your child with two full water bottles every day (one water bottle is ok for half day students).

  • Please send your child with snacks and lunches that will provide them with lasting energy for a busy day in the forest. Protein, and long lasting carbs (such as grains) are important for our full, active days. Vegetables and fruits also help keep us healthy, especially in the winter months. Please keep treats such as cookies, candies, fruit snacks, and other goodies to be enjoyed at home.

  • Our class is hosting the next community work day, on February 4th. Families in our class are especially encouraged to help out on this work day if possible. The work day will be held from 10:00am to 12:00pm. You will receive volunteer hours for each adult from your family attending the work day. Please let me know if you have any questions!

  • The all school meeting will also be on February 4th, following the work day.February 15-17 are early dismissal for all students (12:15-12:30), and conferences will be held on those afternoons. A sign up for spring conferences will go out soon.

Kindergarten River Otters: January 5-6, 2023

Osiyo, River Otter families.

Welcome back for the spring semester!  It was wonderful to see students return to school for the start of the spring semester. We enjoyed getting back into our daily rhythm and are excited for a full week together this week.

Our schedule will remain much the same as last semester, with a few changes. Our weekly schedule is as follows:

Monday: Vegetable chopping, and herbal tea with snack

Tuesday: Farm day, and herbal tea with snack, Golden Knights (for students who are 6 before June 1st) 9:15-10:15

Wednesday: Painting, and soup for snack

Thursday: Games, and oatmeal for snack. Golden Knights 9:15-10:15

Friday: Puppet show or play, and rice for snack. Golden Knights 9:15-10:15

It is the winter season!  As our classroom is in a shaded part of the school property, it is cooler and, after a good rain, it is wetter than it is by the parking lot or at home. Please send your child with the following items every day, regardless of the forecast:

*winter coat

*hat and gloves

*rain suit or rain pants and water-resistant coat

*insulated, waterproof boots

*change of clothing in a wet bag (pants, shirt, sweater, socks, underwear)

*warm blanket (for full-day students only)

Staying warm, with thanks to appropriate clothing, allows our students to thrive every day!

Please read the following article I wrote last year about sleep and children. It is a helpful reminder and resource as we all get back into a routine for school days.

Sleep is important for all of us, especially for children who are still going through so much growth and development physically, mentally, and social-emotionally. The need for enough quality sleep is especially pronounced for young children under third grade, as they are going through an intense time of development in all areas. Sleep is regenerative to our physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual selves. It charges us for the next day and helps us process the day that just passed and what we have learned. The only time the body physically grows is during sleep, and it is critical for the development of the senses and nervous system.

As we have all experienced, the ability to tackle life’s challenges, interact with others and feel that we have had a ‘good day’ depend on having had enough sleep. Likewise, children who are well-rested are far more capable of healthy development and engaging socially with other children. Rested children are more able to engage in play, have a more clear sense of their own physical capability, and eat more easily. Conversely, children who have not had their need for quality sleep met may have difficulty listening, display aggression or appear quick-tempered, have difficulty expressing themselves, or appear withdrawn or sad. Lack of sleep places stress on the body, mind, and spirit. The more sleep deprived a child is, the more excitable they will be, which creates a stress hormone in the body that is harmful to the whole child. As Lisa Gromicko notes in her book Toward Human Development: The Physiological Basis of Sleep, “In consideration of healthy physical development, one cannot stress enough the need for long periods of rest and sleep for young children. In fact, due to the increasing pace of life, more sleep is needed now than ever before to offset the physiologic strain on the young body”.

A helpful guideline for increasing the ability of your child to get enough sleep is if you need to wake them in the morning, you probably need to tuck them into bed earlier that evening. Also, if a child is typically too tired to eat breakfast when they wake, they need to begin their night of sleep earlier. If a child is overtired, it is most beneficial for them to unwind before bedtime with a quiet activity while a caregiver in the same room engages in a quiet, repetitive activity such as knitting or other handwork or folding laundry. If a child is having difficulty sleeping or does not appear rested after sleep, there are many aspects of their day that can be considered when looking for solutions. One of the most common needs children have that promotes healthy sleep is rhythm. If the child does not have a consistent, healthy rhythm to their day, it is difficult for their bodies to know they are tired and be able to fall asleep or remain asleep.  Other questions to consider if a child is having difficulty sleeping are: Is the child receiving enough physical exercise? Do they have enough time throughout the day for closeness, physical touch, and eye contact with caregivers? Are they overstimulated or taking in too much media? Are the sensory impressions they receive throughout the day from their environment and caregivers warm, positive, and joyful?  These questions can assist caregivers in evaluating their child’s day and the barriers to quality sleep they may be experiencing. If you are interested in learning more about the importance of sleep and how to help promote a healthy sleep life for your child, please let us know and we would be happy to share some resources with you.

Kindergarten River Otters: December 12-16, 2022

Osiyo, River Otter families.

We finished the fall semester with some structured crafts, and a lot of fun!  On Monday and Tuesday, students made pomanders. These small oranges decorated with whole cloves originated in Europe in the middle ages and were thought to have protective and healing properties. We think they are fun to make and wonderful to smell. On Wednesday, students dipped pinecones tied with yarn into a pot of melted beeswax and clove bud oil. These make wonderful fire starters. Each student got to take some home, and we will make more for our fires at school when we return. Thursday we finished our short week hearing a version of the story “The Gingerbread Man” and decorated our own gingerbread people with royal icing. This activity was both fun and delicious.

The students may want to use our class blessings at mealtimes at home. This can help provide them a sense of our routine while we are away from class. Our snacktime blessing is:

Blessings on the blossoms,

Blessings on the fruits,

Blessings on the leaves and stems,

Blessings on the roots.

Thank you for our food and friends.

Our lunchtime blessing is:

Earth who gives to us this food,

Sun who makes it ripe and good,

Sun above and Earth below.

Our loving thanks to you we show.

Blessings on our food and friends.

Thank you for making it a wonderful fall semester. We are excited for what the spring semester holds for us. We hope you enjoy your time with your families on break, and that the students return rested, rejuvenated, and excited for the rest of the year. Thank you for sharing your children with us, and for being part of our community.

Kindergarten River Otters: December 5-9, 2022

Osiyo, River Otter families.

The River Otters enjoyed a rainy week at school!  Thank you for sending your children with rain gear every day. It was needed and appreciated. Students discovered that they could sculpt and build with mud, which led to great creativity while building muscles in their hands for writing later on in the grades. We also began learning to use a hacksaw this week. This is an activity that builds not only strength and muscle control, but also attention span, listening to and following multi-step directions, focus, and noticing details. It is beneficial for all ages, but especially important for the rising first grade students. While most students only used the saw for a short time, their muscles and attention will grow with practice. Over the spring semester we will saw birch branches into rounds of different thicknesses and sand them by hand. When complete, they will be building blocks for the classroom.

Over the semester break, it would be wonderful if families can practice tasks with their students at home to help build independence. We work with the students daily to help them move toward the ability to care for themselves and their belongings. Our goal and expectation is for rising first graders to be fully independent with their clothing and belongings before the end of the school year. Some things many students are working on include putting on and zipping rain gear, putting on gloves, taking items off without turning them inside out, getting their blankets out and putting them away, and packing and closing their backpacks. Especially this time of year, a full sized backpack really helps the students be successful with having what they need and caring for their belongings. We will be excited for them to show us what they have practiced over the break!

Announcements and Reminders

  • Please drop off a new, unwrapped toy for the MUST Ministries Toy Shop this week, if you are able. These toys will be available for families in need to select for their children, for the upcoming holidays.

  • This Thursday, 12/15, is the last day of the fall semester. It is also half day dismissal for all students (12:15-12:30). School will resume on Thursday, 1 /5.

  • There is a Grades assembly on Thursday, at 12:00. While kindergarten students will not be attending, we encourage you to attend if you are available. It is a great opportunity to get a look into our Grades program, as the students in each grade present song and verses demonstrating material they are working on at school.

Thank you for sharing your children with us, and for being part of our community.

Kindergarten River Otters : November 29- December 2, 2022

Osiyo, River Otter families.

It was wonderful to see everyone after a week apart. This week the students were very busy and engaged in their play. This time of year children often naturally gravitate toward outdoor activities that keep them warm. There has continued to be a lot of digging and fort building. We have also trimmed branches, raked leaves, and carried firewood. The students kept moving by searching for dragons and sat near the fire and told each other stories. We all agreed our oatmeal is especially delicious on cold days. Next week students will have the opportunity to begin sawing branches and firewood. This is another activity that will use muscles and keep us warm!

This Friday is our Winter Spiral. This is a beloved festival at The Garden School and across Waldorf schools and communities. This festival occurs near the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year. The children silently and reverently walk the spiral with an unlit candle. They meet their teacher in the middle of the spiral to have their candle lit from a larger candle, and then place their candle on a star of their choosing on their silent walk out through the spiral. This touching ritual symbolizes each child giving their own special and unique light to the world, helping guide others in the dark. Families are welcome (and encouraged!) to watch their child’s class walk the spiral. Our walk will begin at 10:15 am. Please arrive with enough time to find a place at our spiral in the forest (signs will guide your way). Two-day students are invited to join us for the spiral; please meet us in our forest classroom at 10:00 if they will be joining us. They may also join us for cocoa after the spiral, and leave with their family directly following snack. The ingredients of the cocoa are: coconut milk, cocoa powder, sugar, salt, vanilla. If you would prefer your child not participate in the cocoa or bring their own, please let me know.

Announcements and Reminders:

  • Full day students should bring a warm blanket each day for rest time. We will continue to rest outdoors as it gets colder, and the blankets are needed. The students rest so well covered up in the cooler weather!

  • Next week (December 12-15) is our MUST Ministries toy drive. If you are interested in participating, please bring a new, unwrapped toy this week. We will collect them during pick up and drop off. A list of their most needed toys can be found here. You can also make a financial donation here (enter toy shops in the comment section).

  • Next Thursday, 12/15, is the last day of the semester and a HALF DAY for all students (12:30 dismissal). There is also an assembly put on by the grades classes at 12:00. Kindergarten parents are welcome and encouraged to attend and see some of the wonderful things the grades students have been learning.

  • December 16-January 4 is semester break. January 5th is the first day of the spring semester!

Thank you for sharing your children with us, and for being part of our community.
