First Grade: August 21-25, 2023

Hello First Grade Families,

Last week, the children completed their first block in the Grades classes. Form Drawing will rest for a while, although it will appear in our curriculum from time to time. As the children have already begun to notice, Form Drawing is so much more than lines and curves. As the children completed their work, they would sometimes remark, “This Form looks like a ‘c’” or “This Form reminds me of a word.” Form Drawing will carry on not only into letter formations, reading, and writing, but also into mathematics as the students learn their tables, and eventually geometry and beyond.

Our drawings last week were accompanied by the stories The Dragon Bridge, One-Eye, Two-Eye, Three-Eye, The Star Money, and The Sea Nymph. The Sea Nymph was particularly enjoyed by our class, but if you ask the students, they will likely say their favorite part of the week was going to Creekcess- twice!

We now find ourselves in our first reading block. This week had been eagerly anticipated by our class, the children have begun to count down how many days until we “get to read.” This is the gift of holding on until the right moment. The children are ready, eager, and willing to learn!

Each letter will be introduced with a story, and our letters this week will be introduced with Snow White and Red Rose and Simili Mountain. The letters will be a surprise to the children, and we will steadily work our way through our alphabet as we begin to build the letters together to form words and writing.

Next Wednesday, September 6th, is Curriculum Night! We will enjoy a circle activity, review our weekly schedule, and hear an overview of the First Grade curriculum. We look forward to seeing you on campus for this adults-only event.
