Happy February! The month started wet, and not too cold to play in the slippery mud. It is beautiful to see how much joy children get from nature in every season. On Thursday, games day, I had a new game planned to share with the students. Their bright and creative minds had another idea. The beauty of Waldorf and forest kindergarten is the opportunity to follow their lead when they are ready to work on different skills. The students wanted to throw rocks into a metal container they hung on a tree in our class area. For safety reasons, we have a specific throwing spot at the edge of our classroom so the rocks will bounce harmlessly into the forest., The students decided to put the container in the throwing area (after some trial and error, they realized surrounding it by rocks would keep it upright) and try to throw rocks into it. The class spent time taking turns standing in a pre-determined spot and each throwing three rocks at a time, as they tried to get them into the container. This game was just what they needed this week, and they created it themselves!
We have regular artistic and handwork activities available on a rotating schedule. These weekly activities are sewing, yarn work, and drawing. This week was sewing week, and several students were interested in this activity. Students made pillows, and dolls, along with small items for their dolls, and practiced stitches on pieces of wool felt. It is exciting to watch students become enthusiastic about activities when allowed to explore and practice them on their own timeline.
Thank you to all of our families who joined us this past Saturday for our All School meeting. Coming together as a community to support our lovely school is what keeps us strong and helps us grow.
