Kindergarten River Otters: April 24-28, 2023

Osiyo, River Otter families,

THANK YOU to everyone for helping make our annual fundraiser a success!  From helping with the class project, volunteering for the event, coming to the auction, and inviting others, we couldn’t have done it without you.

Our class has been hard at work building simple machines and creating businesses. When a group of students was looking for a way to keep their favorite rocks (“gems”) safe, we built a pulley system. Students explored different types of pulleys, as well as ways to make the pulley more successful. By the end of the week, we had two different pulleys in the outdoor classroom. The first gem-collecting group inspired others to search for their own special gems, which they used to open a gem shop in their large fort. Students made a window in the side of the fort, created signs with paper and crayons, and accepted other nature treasures in exchange for special gems.

When Thunder moved us indoors on Thursday afternoon, students decided to start a different business in the indoor classroom. Our new, soon-to-be redecorated puppet stand became a library and fruit stand. Students came to the window to check out one of our books, or to purchase some of our cloth play fruit. This was a popular endeavor, and students especially enjoyed checking out library books. We also beaded necklaces, modeled with beeswax, and drew with chalk. Later in the day, we enjoyed sliding down the wet slide in our rain gear, and into the mud below. It was like our very own waterslide!
