Kindergarten River Otters: May 8-12, 2023

Osiyo, River Otter families.

The River Otter class enjoyed a week of artistic and practical work and of building and inventing in the forest. The students were able to wedge a tire between two trees and used that as the base for a treehouse. They also used mud and sticks to build a volcano, and made small toy dinosaurs from sticks and yarn. On Wednesday afternoon, we got to take a special trip to the big playground! Students enjoyed the tire swing, practiced going across the monkey bars, climbed the big climbing dome, and worked together riding the teeter totters. Tuesday was farm day when  we had the opportunity to play with some of the younger students in the Joyful Beginnings class at the farm. Together, they climbed and jumped like goats, and pet the donkeys.

Our last morning circle of the school year is about spring, and welcoming the sun and the return of our animal friends. We are building our proprioceptive and vestibular senses, memory, and ability to cross different midlines by crouching, jumping, walking and spinning in circles, walking in and out of the circle, changing directions quickly, and moving our bodies in a variety of directions. One of our favorite songs in this circle is a beautiful traditional Waldorf melody with the following lyrics:

Good morning, Brother Sunshine,

Good morning, Sister Moon.

I beg your humble pardon,

I’ve got my hat, I’ll be there soon.

I thought I heard you laughing,

To shut you out I would not do.

My heart is standing open,

Won’t you come right through.
