Second Grade: May 15-19, 2023

Dear Second Grade Families,

Thank you for an amazing year of second grade! Watching your children grow this year has been an absolute joy. Thank you also for my beautiful plant, precious signed pot, and generous end of school year gift! I’m so thankful for all the kindness and support you have given throughout the year.

We had a wonderful field day last week! Students enjoyed playing games and creating amazing, giant bubbles together! The students especially loved getting soaked during a crochet water balloon toss, sponge relay, and sprinkler fun. We then shared a popsicle treat together to complete our day of fun.

To end the school year, the students reviewed their main lesson books, journals, and paintings from the entire year. They picked a few pieces they were most proud of to share with the class. We were all delighted with each other’s favorite works. It was magical watching them remember where they began this year, and feeling a sense of pride for how much they have learned since then. These books hold a lovely sampling of all they learned this past year, and were brought home by your child to share with you.

This summer, please have your child practice the reading and writing assigned sight words. They can make flash cards of the words, review pre-made flash cards, or practice writing and reading a few words a day with you. I will follow up with an email including a pdf of these assigned words and some additional fun summer ideas for reviewing the words later today. Please also have your child practice addition and subtraction math facts with numbers 1-20 throughout the summer.

I cannot believe this school year is over! It went so fast, but was jam packed with wonderful memories. Thank you again for all your support and kindness. I wish you all a happy summer filled with fun, family, and some rest too!  Best of luck in the third grade with many more learning adventures!

Lots of love,

Ki Hayley

Second Grade: May 8-12, 2023

Dear Second Grade Families,

Happy Tuesday!

A big thank you to our beautiful community for all the wonderful Teacher Appreciation treats, cards, and care.

Last week, our class finished play rehearsals with the most marvelous finale- our play performance! Our students put on a wonderful show and saw all their efforts come together beautifully. Way to go second grade! Thank you to all family and friends who attended, helped with costumes, brought treats for our lovely cast party, and helped make the event possible. The confidence and smiles shared by students was such a special treat!

We also continued reviewing our main lesson books and strengthened our understanding of various math and English language arts concepts we have worked with this year. We also heard a marvelous story titled “Little Witch Hazel: A Year in the Forest.” We observed and discussed the forest changes that are coming with the new, much warmer weather.

Field day is tomorrow! Lots of fun will be had; students will be getting wet! Please send students with towels and extra clothes, if desired.

Reminders:

Please equip your child with sun hats, insect repellent, 2 filled water bottles, and water shoes for Creekcess on Friday. Students must have hard-soled, closed-toed shoes for safe and fun play in the creek.

5/17:  Field Day

5/19:  Last Day of School

5/20: SUMMER BREAK BEGINS!

Second Grade: May 8-12, 2023

Dear Second Grade Families,

Happy Tuesday! Our class has been working tirelessly on all things Class Play! We have been working on actor voices, stage presence, and scene changes throughout this past week. The students are just giddy to share all their hard work with you on Thursday! Thank you dearly for your help with to costumes and props; your time is so appreciated. Our play is this Thursday at 5:00pm in the sanctuary. Please have students arrive at 4:45pm to join our class huddle before we set the stage! Our play will be followed by a cast party at the picnic tables; please sign-up to bring some goodies if you can do so!

Last week, we continued in our current English Language Arts block. We carried on with multisyllabic word work and cursive writing practice. Additionally, we began reviewing different concepts we have learned this year in both math and English Language Arts, and will continue this work for the remainder of the school year.

Additionally, last Friday I shared the news with our second grade that I will not be returning as their teacher next year. We had a gentle conversation about what the term “bittersweet” means, and I let the children know I am happy to be following my dream, but quite sad I will not be their teacher in third grade. We shared some hugs and then jumped into listening to a silly story about a very hot dog in summer who just NEEDS to get to the beach! Giggles and smiles spread quickly. Afterward, there was time for students to ask any questions they had. The news was well received, and the children agreed it is bittersweet.

Our students had the opportunity of being taught by Ki Paulyna earlier this year. They reminded each other of her kindness and are looking forward to seeing her again. Thank you to you all for the immense love and support you have given me in my time at The Garden School! This school and community are pure magic, and I will miss everyone dearly. Thank you also for sharing your wonderful children with me. Teaching them has been an absolute pleasure, and I look forward to hearing about all the adventures they’ll have in the future!

Reminders:

Now that the weather is (finally!) warming, please equip your child with sun hats, insect repellent, 2 filled water bottles, and water shoes. We have resumed Creekcess, and students may only go in the water if they have hard-soled, closed-toed shoes for the creek.

Second Grade: April 10-14, 2023

Dear Second Grade Families,

Happy Tuesday! Thank you deeply to all who assisted with knitting and assembling our class auction project, a beautiful wool blanket! There is great excitement surrounding the end product and we are excited to see it become a part of our school auction’s amazing offerings.

Last week, we began our play block. The children delighted in working on becoming different characters, reciting lines, and practicing voice work. They also enjoyed working on theatrical qualities through theater games. We will continue practice this week and students will be assigned parts by Friday. Help will be needed to create student costumes. If you are interested in assisting with costume creation, please email me this week. In Waldorf plays, the focus is on the student, rather than sets and costumes; costumes will remain simple. Thank you in advance for your help with this!

We also launched our current English Language Arts block. We are focusing on syllabication, learning to break down multisyllabic words, and reviewing the difference between open and closed syllables. Additionally, we continue to learn new cursive letters daily. Students have greatly enjoyed this process and look forward to a new letter each day!

Reminders:

Now that the weather is warming, please equip your child with sun hats, insect repellent, and water shoes. Creekcess will begin soon and students may only go in the water if they have hard-soled, closed-toed shoes for the creek.

Dear Second Grade Families,

Happy Tuesday! It was so wonderful to host the many amazing grand friends at our school last Friday. Fun was had by all! Thank you for your support in helping make such a lovely event take place.

Last week, we wrapped our current place value math block and continued to introduce new cursive letters daily. When we return from break, we will begin our next language arts block. We will continue to learn how to form cursive letters, as well as work with spelling patterns and breaking down multi-syllable words.

If students were interested, they were able to bring their handwork bags home for the break. If your child brought theirs home, please encourage them to continue working on our auction project when time permits. April 28th is fast approaching! Thanks always for all your help and support with this.

Last week, we celebrated TJ’s birthday in class- happy birthday TJ! Our class shared what makes TJ a special part of our school family. His peers admire how he always pauses the game when someone is hurt, is so fun to play hunters with, and is an “infinity” best friend!

Last week, we also celebrated Zoe’s birthday in class- happy birthday Zoe! Our class shared what makes Zoe a special part of our school family. Her peers admire how she loves rainbows, always asks friends if they want a hug when they are sad, and is the best and the silliest friend in the multiverse!

Dear Second Grade Families,

Happy Tuesday! Last week, we continued to practice addition with multi-digit numbers using regrouping during our math block. We listened to a wonderful story based on the Native American legend of The Jumping Mouse. Students were quite taken with this story, and quite wonderfully so, as it will be the basis of our class play this year! We will begin daily play practice this week. More information to come soon! Help will be needed to make costumes and students will be asked to practice lines at home. Thank you in advance for your help with this!

Additionally, we have begun our introduction to cursive writing. Students have been working with different running forms this year, and are ready to start forming cursive letters. We will introduce one new letter a day. Second grade has been so excited to write what they have been calling “fancy writing.” Way too sweet!

This week, we will continue practicing multi-digit addition and subtraction problems using regrouping. Also, we will begin working on our play! More details to come on this soon- yay!

We continued daily mental math, phonics practice, and bean bag activities for motor development. As a reminder, please continue to practice math facts at home. Memorizing basic math facts (for example, 4+6, 5+5, 10-7), is paramount for mathematics success.

Last week in Mandarin, students were delighted to learn how to write numbers 1-100 in Mandarin. This was very exciting as they have learned to count and now write these numbers! Dear Second Grade Families,

Happy Tuesday! Last week, we continued to review place values of thousands, hundreds, tens and ones. We have been practicing using the four processes with larger, multi-digit numbers. While reviewing subtraction, students delighted in pretending to be mischievous goblins, taking hundreds of jewels from the castle! We also continued to listen to Jataka Tales. Students especially loved hearing “The Monkey and the Crocodile,” a story of witty battles and tricks between the animals!

As a special treat, we had the opportunity to see miniature dwellings the third and fourth-grade students built at home for their block on Shelters Around the World.  The second-grade class loved listening to the other students present about their building processes and the history of the type of homes they built. Second Grade: January 23 - 27

Dear Second Grade Families,

Happy Tuesday! Last week, we continued our current English Language Arts block. We focused on complex spellings, vowel pairings, and word endings. We have been hearing many different fables beloved by our students. The students especially enjoyed hearing “The Fox and the Crow” last week. A wise fox tricks a crow out of her snack! These stories bring up characteristics of different animals that the children have loved discussing. My, how clever and sneaky foxes are!

We continue to review our times tables through recitation and practice. Please remember to help your child practice their math tables at home.  Immediate recall of basic math facts allows a child to focus on the steps of higher-level math equations, and not be slowed down by needing to count on fingers or work hard to recall facts. Students who memorize their math facts find math to be much easier and are more successful!

This Saturday, February 4, is our All School Meeting (adults only, please)!  Following our community workday, we ask you to please join us at 12:00 for a faculty-sponsored, complimentary soup bar before we join together to hear about the “State of the School” at 12:30.  As an added incentive, each family represented receives 2 volunteer hours.

Students will continue to bring their flutes for Music class; this semester music will be held Mondays and Fridays.

Second Grade: December 12-16, 2022

Dear Second Grade Families,

How quickly fall semester flew by! Thank you for all your help in making such a magical year possible for our students at the wonderful Garden School! Additionally, thank you very much for the delightful gifts and warm wishes over break! We are looking forward to all the learning and excitement Spring semester holds.

We had a fun day on Wednesday at our class party/pajama day!  Thank you to all who donated goodies and supplies.  We read books, made a winter treat for our forest animals, and delighted at our silly sock exchange! Our Assembly was also a success!  How wonderful it was to gather together again and enjoy watching classes across the grades perform. Thank you to those who were able to attend!

Last week, we continued working with place value and adding and subtracting two-digit numbers. We finished our beloved read aloud “Where The Mountain Meets the Moon,” and students were delighted to retell and write about the story in their main lesson books. When we return, we will launch into our next Language Arts block and focus heavily on spelling patterns and vowel teams. We will hear many captivating fables during this block, such as The Fox and The Grapes. Exploring the archetypal notions of good and evil, fables offer lessons of morality and personal responsibility, while simultaneously appealing to the trickster personality of the second grader. We never explain the morality lessons in these fables, as we trust each child to bring them to life on their own and in their own time.  We encourage you all to allow this process to unfold naturally for your child as well. Thank you!

Wishing you all a wonderful and restful Winter break with your loved ones! See you in the new year!

Moving forward, we will be using larger numbers while working with addition and subtraction.

Last week we celebrated Ileana’s half birthday in class- happy birthday Ileana! Our class shared what makes Ileana a special part of our school family. Her peers adore how she loves trying new games, turns into a new animal every week during play time, and is so tough if she ever gets hurt!
