Joyful Beginnings: September 3 - 6

On Wednesday, Joyful Beginnings celebrated Kaiden's third birthday. We shared Kaiden's birthday story with the rest of the class and his Dad was our special guest. Together we enjoyed a birthday treat of berries with whipped coconut cream.

We spent the rest of the morning in the garden: watering the flowers, digging in the soil, balancing on a wobbly board, and listening to a story of a little bear and the honey bees.

Friday was filled with our first watercolor painting. The children really enjoyed sitting down to draw bees and yellow flowers. We spent the rest of the day playing on the big playground and visiting the animals. At the end of the day, some of the students had an opportunity to watch their siblings perform on stage during the First Friday Assembly.

Upper Grades: August 26 - 30

Last week was the second week of our Physics block. In the first week we studied acoustics, and this past week we moved into the study of optics exploring light and the nature and properties of color. We spent most of our main lesson time immersed in lab demonstrations and activities to give the students hands-on experiences and observations to help them derive the related laws of physics themselves. This phenomenological approach to science in Waldorf schools brings sensory experiences to the students to help them form empirical knowledge of the sciences. You can read more about this approach here: https://www.waldorflibrary.org/articles/597-what-is-phenomenology The students are writing lab reports for their main lesson books and their understanding of the lab write-up process has blossomed from week one to week two of our block. This week also recalled some of the geometry skills from last year. In the upcoming week, we will explore thermodynamics and continue to strengthen our lab report skills.

Some of our other endeavors include our ongoing ukulele instruction, poetry memory work, grammar, and art. We will also continue to learn about global social issues and marginalized groups through the books we're reading for class.

Middle Grades: August 26 - 30

I hope all of you had a wonderful holiday weekend. This will be the last week of our math block, but not the end of math. We will do a math worksheet every day to keep all of the new skills at the forefront and fresh. Book reports are due on Friday. If you have any questions, please feel free to call or text me (770) 654-7878 or email me.

Don’t forget to help your child to remember to bring violins and recorders on Monday and Wednesday.

Have a great week. I hope to see you Friday at the Assembly.

Second Grade: August 26 - 30

The second graders enjoyed the week learning and playing together. We heard Aesop’s fables about ants, herons, rabbits, bees, and wasps. With each animal, we shared what we already knew and learned more interesting facts about them. We focused more on naming words (nouns) and doing words (verbs). Soon will be learning about describing words (adjectives).

We also spent time learning to draw each animal with block crayons in a step-by-step manner. Coloring with block crayons in Waldorf education is a special task. Rather than draw outlines and fill them in, we use the various edges of our crayons and start from the center, often with an oval or circle. This allows us to work with our shapes rather than be trapped with an outline when we want to fix or add details. The children enjoy this method and continue to develop their skills daily.

Spanish and Mandarin continue to be interesting and fun classes. The children sing, work, and move while immersed in the languages.

This past week we modeled various animals with clay, painted circles of the primary colors to work with blending colors as well as using a clean brush to remove color from our paintings. In handwork, students are working with knitting before moving on to crocheting. In Environmental Education, we also learned more about insects and their habits. Our Friday Creekcess is always a fun ending for a week full of learning!

Please remind your families and children of our school’s media policies. Along with living a low-media lifestyle, we ask that the children refrain from talking about media-related games, movies, etc. in our school.

With gratitude,

Ki Melissa

First Grade: August 26 - 30

Hello first grade families!

I am excited to state that we have finished up our first block of form drawing. The children always showed excitement when they saw the form being drawn. They would work hard at making those forms and would become excited when they were able to show their other classmates. They enjoyed listening to stories about princes and princesses, three brothers on a journey to rescue their father, and a tailor boy who killed giants and became a king.

This upcoming week we will be starting our language arts block. We will not only be going over the sounds of the letters, we will be starting to form each sound to make the words that we use everyday. I will be bringing these letters with more stories and more pictures that will capture each child's interest and assist them with developing those skills they will need to someday become an avid reader.

The children continue to enjoy their special classes. Adding music to our curriculum has proven to be a positive move. The children are enjoying the songs that they are learning, and will, at times, start singing one in particular in unison.

Reminders:

Half day on Friday and first Friday assembly.

Please remember to bring a change of clothes each day. Even though we may not necessarily be going to the creek there are many times when we will be outside while it is raining or where there is mud.
Thank you,

Ki Aja

Kindergarten: August 26 - 30

Greetings Forestgarten Families!

Adventures abounded this past week in the forest, garden, and our classroom!

We enjoyed a taste of fall with cooler mornings, which allowed us to venture to the garden and spend some time with our animal friends.  We fed some treats to the donkeys, goats, and chickens.  We picked kudzu for them as well and the children enjoyed watching the animals feast!

Ki Holly offered a botany lesson and the students loved it! She was brave enough to pick some poison ivy to show the students how to identify it.  The children were very attentive and had lots of poignant questions throughout the lesson.

We made birdfeeders this week with pine cones, peanut butter, and compost from our trail mix snack.  The students each chose a special spot for their birdfeeder and we checked on them the next day.  They were excited to see that the birds had eaten everything!

Our story this week was The Little Red Hen.  She was a busy hen, working hard to plant, sow, and harvest wheat.  She then milled it into flour and baked delicious bread.  At each step, she asked her friends for help but they were always too busy. Once they smelled the bread though, they yearned to eat some of it.  See if your Forestgartener can fill in the rest!

We have been enjoying our afternoons in the classroom where the children are engaging in very different, yet equally creative play as compared to their outdoor adventures.  They played with silks, stuffed animals, dolls, blocks, and modeling clay.  We love to see the intricate, imaginary worlds they create with the beautiful, yet simple, materials in our classroom.

We are looking forward to another wonderful week ahead!

Kindly,

Ki Fatima,

Ki Holly

Joyful Beginnings: August 26 - 30

This week students explored the campus. Each school day we took a different path in our outside area.

The start of the week brought a cooler mornings. On Monday, we stayed back in our small playground near the school. The students were happy to for the opportunity to play in the sandbox.

On Wednesday, the weather had improved and we went to the large playground. Our path lead down small but steep hill. For our younger kids, this was a nice challenge where the teachers could assist them based on their abilities.

We will try having Wednesdays as our baking days. We made tortilla breads. The students got to mix the ingredients and shape the dough for the tortillas. Then they were able to taste the baked goods alongside our snack. Thank you to the parent volunteers for our snacks. It was so colorful and we love exploring the variety of colors in our fruit and vegetables!

On Friday, we went to our garden patch. The teachers gathered jalapeno peppers that were ripe, and we got to feed the donkey and goats. We also enjoyed the many butterflies that were flittering around the garden flowers.

On Friday, we also had a story time. The children listened to a story about ants, and an ant poem. Then we accompanied the poem with musical instruments. Everyone had rhythm sticks to keep the story going.

We welcomed back Ki Ieva to our class.

We had a visitor this week! Mrs. Marks is a teacher and author of several books on parenting and making connections with children. She spent an hour in our classroom. We very much enjoyed playing and singing songs with her.

Upper Grades: August 19 - 23

We started our Physics block last week with the study of Acoustics where we conducted many experiments that allowed the students to derive conclusions about the nature of sound, pitch, volume, how sound is propagated, and the contribution of the larynx and human voice to punctuate the week. The class read The Lions of Little Rock to support our look into the power of the human voice and to further our social justice studies. This week we will explore light and color.

On Friday, we said goodbye and celebrated our classmate Ellie with s'mores and a candle ceremony. We wish her well on her new adventures at the Lake Champlain Waldorf School and hope she'll be back to visit soon.

Middle Grades: August 19 - 23

We spent three lovely mornings this week on the new floating classroom. As we continued our math block, the students measured different things - their arm from shoulder to the end of the middle finger, the length of their shoes, and how far each student jumped from one designated spot. Then we took those numbers, added them up, estimated what the average length was, and then divided the total by the number students to find the true average. I demonstrated and they copied a long division problem. Two of the days, like magic, the average was an even number. The last day we measured, there was a remainder, so I had the opportunity to show them how a remainder worked. We will continue to do problems like this every day this week, and then once or twice a week until they answer my questions before I ask them, and then I will begin to give them division problems to solve on their own. We have also been doing preparatory work to get ready for fractions, which will be our next math block.

We continue to do form drawing exercises that will get everyone ready for cursive, which we will begin in a couple of weeks. The spelling test will be on Tuesday from now on. Please help your child practice these words. More than 50% of them made 100% on the quiz last Tuesday!!

There was a lesson in dictionary orientation this week. Soon the students will be looking up the definitions of their spelling words each week and writing a sentence using each word.

This week we had a class in modeling clay. Most of the students finished their first needlepoint project - a bookmark, and in music class we had a guest trombonist talk about the brass family of instruments and then play several pieces. We are learning a quodlibet, which is a song that has multiple melodies that sound good together, so that when we have it performance ready, the music class will be singing in four part harmony! Next week we will be making a glass harmonica and learning to play a melody or two on it. If your child has a recorder, please send it to school. We will begin playing the recorder and a variety of other instruments by next week. I have been collecting Aulos and Angel recorders this summer, so I think I have enough recorders for everyone, but if your child does not have one at home, you might want to consider giving them one for a birthday or holiday gift. The Angel and Aulos brands are inexpensive and have a beautiful tone. Yamaha recorders are good quality also. Those who are continuing to take violin lessons should bring their violins on Wednesday of this week, and then on Monday and Wednesday going forward into the semester.

You will be receiving an email tomorrow with the details of our first field trip of the year, which is a two-night overnight on St. Simons Island at the Driftwood learning center. This trip will be September 30-October 2, and is part of our block on local geography. It will be such a great experience for them, and for me. I'm really looking forward to it.

There will be another email coming soon about book reports. Each child has chosen a book to read. There will be several options for book reports this year, and they can choose from the many options which one they think best fits the book they are reading. I am trying to get into a rhythm of their reading a new book and doing a report once every two weeks.

Many thanks to the Bensons for painting our bulletin board and helping to sew the table covers and donating several lamps for the room. It's beginning to look nice and cozy!!

Have a great week.

Second Grade: August 19 - 23

The second grade class had a fun and busy week at school. Please continue to send in water bottles and creek clothes. Your child should be prepared every day for getting wet (lucky them ;)! Also, we ask that parents do their best to send in healthy snacks and lunches. Please do your best to avoid sugary snacks and heavily processed foods as much as you can. Thank you!

During morning circle we practice many mathematic skills through movement. We have been counting, adding numbers, skip counting, and chanting multiplication tables. We do this while stomping feet, clapping, passing and throwing beanbags and large and small balls. We work independently, with partners, and as a whole class. It’s a special time during our day as we build our personal skills, class unity, and we practice class verses too! Please continue to arrive at school by 8:40 (and that they have used the restroom as needed as we don’t stop during circle time except to drink water) so your child doesn’t miss this important learning experience!

For our fables block, we heard several Aesop’s fables. Prior to each story, we spend time talking about what each animal is like in its natural habitat. It’s a time where the children share what they know about various animals and learn even more about them. Following our fables we draw pictures, and practice writing through various activities. This week we focused on naming words (nouns) and doing words (verbs), and we copied short phrases for several animals and how they move. We also had fun alphabetizing our first names! We learned to use the first letter in our name, and then second (or third!) letter along with the alphabet chart as needed. We also took a couple extra creek trips this week as our schedule and the hot temperatures allowed for it!

Let’s also welcome Zion Summerfield to second grade! He is a welcomed full-time student to our happy class!

Finally, thank you all for pitching in for our class water crock! It has already made it easier for the children to keep their water bottles full (and there is less water on the floor too ;)

With gratitude,

Ki Melissa

First Grade: August 19 - 23

Hello first grade families!

Last week we continued to work on our form drawings and exploring the stories of Grimm. The children are enjoying the stories that are being told to them and are progressing at retelling what has happened in the story. I encourage everyone to talk to their child about the stories that are given to them. In addition, much progress is being made in regards to taking their time and concentrating on the task at hand.

The transition from singing the songs in language class to going further in depth in Spanish and Mandarin has been a successful one. Our class has started to do their characters in Mandarin where they are starting to learn how to make the words that they are saying. While it may be difficult at first, everyone worked hard at trying to accomplish the goal of making the characters.

The students are excited to start American Sign Language with Ki Emily this upcoming Friday. They have already had movement class with Ki Emily and are excited to continue their journey with her as they add in another language. They have particularly loved handwork as many of you parents have seen the pom poms they have sent home.

Reminders:

Please take a look at the handbook in regards to lunches and possibly not sending a lot of sugary treats.

Talking about characters has slowed down a bit but it is still coming up throughout the day. Please give gentle reminders that we are not supposed to talk about movies, or shows, while at school.

If you have any questions the best way to reach me is through email.

We are outside a lot and the mosquitoes are still lurking about. While I do carry bug spray, if there is a specific bug spray you would like your child to have you are more then welcome to have them bring it to school.

Thank you,

Ki Aja

Kindergarten: August 19 - 23

Greetings Forestgarten Families!

Happy adventures filled our week as we began to settle into our daily rhythms.

We celebrated our first birthday of the school year for dear Maya, who turned five years old.  We enjoyed hearing memories from when Maya was a baby and everyone (teachers included!) were thankful for the yummy ice pops that she shared.  They were a perfect treat for a hot summer morning!

Although bittersweet for our community, we celebrated sweet Valkyra’s upcoming adventures as she and her family move from Georgia and head to Vermont.  She shared popcorn with everyone during snack on Friday and we wished her well and gave lots of hugs.

The students are really enjoying the daily activities that are offered in the forest each day. Painting with Ki Fatima is one of their favorites and this week they went on an adventure with the color red.

Story time took us to Smush the ant’s kingdom.  The ants needed food and Smush came to the rescue.  It was not easy, but he met other kind creatures along the way and in the end he saved the day. We observed the children viewing our own ant friends a bit differently after hearing this story, realizing that the tiniest of creatures are capable of strong and powerful feats!

We are looking ahead to another fantastic week with our lovely class!

 Kindly,

Ki Fatima

Joyful Beginnings: August 19 - 23

Joyful beginnings had a lot of fun with Ki Holly from Kindergarten visiting the class this week. On Monday and Wednesday, she let the chicken out of the coop in the school garden and they roamed freely between the students. We all enjoyed following them around and watching them search for food in the grass. Back in the classroom, Ki Holly shared the story of the Little Red Hen with us. On Wednesday, the students "baked" with modeling clay and had fun forming clay balls. On Friday, Ki Emily substituted for Ki Ieva and together we explored a new path in the forest. We found a glittering crystal on the forest floor and had to get around a big mud puddle. Special thanks goes out to Max and his family who came to spruce up the area around the forest bathroom during Saturday's community work day.

Upper Grades: August 12 - 16

The Upper Grades class spent their first week in the classroom exercising and refining our mindset for the academic year. We refreshed our math skills by diving back into fractions and warmed up our pens with a short essay about our camping trip.

We explored several concepts to help strengthen our approach to the year by working through the first 50 pages of Big Life Journal. Big Life Journal aims to help children "develop a growth and resilient mindset so they can face life's challenges with confidence." We explored our current mindset around various aspects of life and learned about how we can train our brains through perseverance and determination. We will continue to work through additional exercises throughout the year. We supplemented our mindset work with the book A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park. In this true story about the "lost boys" of Sudan, the students explored the concepts of overcoming adversity through determination.

We are taking advantage of our dwindling days with Ki Jas and having her lead our ukulele sessions each morning. The students have progressed rapidly and are enjoying revisiting some of the folk music we sang last year.

This week we launch our first major main lesson block of the year with Physics and the study of sound.

Middle Grades: August 12 - 16

We had a great week: new handwork project, music listening to identify the instruments of the orchestra, 1st steps to writing poetry, lots of math review, including a project today to discover all of the prime numbers up to 100, form drawing prep for cursive writing, silent reading, taking a verb from past to present to (to be) plus gerund and then writing sentences with each word, feeding chickens, leaf identification, braiding with embroidery thread, and creek exploration.

Next week will be even more packed. We will be moving to our outdoor classroom - the new floating classroom, so please be sure each child has their sunscreen, water bottle, and DEET-free bug spray. Our plan is to go straight to the classroom after we do our farm chores and stay until right before foreign language. Check to make sure the ponchos are in backpacks, in case we have a sudden shower. There will be a spelling test on Tuesday, and each child will be asked to recite the 7s multiplication tables up to 12 by the end of the week. We will be painting and drawing in addition to our other activities, and we’ll hopefully have our first ASL lesson.

Have a great week yourselves, and don’t forget to read with your child EVERY DAY!!!!!

Second Grade: August 12 - 16

The second grade class had a busy and fun first week of school. We moved around campus regularly, from dome, to woods, to the building to beat the heat! The children were really wonderful about it all, and took the changes in classroom space with ease and in stride.

This past week we began with some fables that teach to being our best selves, such as The Bundle of Sticks , The North Wind and the Sun, and The Oxen and the Wheels. We decorated our own sticks with yarn to create our classroom bundle to remind us that we are strongest when we are kindest to each other! We also reviewed letter and numeral formation and practice some math and circle skills we learned last year. The students enjoyed meeting Ki Emily, who leads our Movement classes, Ki Gaby, who helped them wind many balls of yarn (and also helped with various tangles ;) in Handwork, adventured around campus with Ki Derek during Environmental Education, and also began to learn to read music with Ki Kathee. The children enjoyed their Spanish, Mandarin and ASL lessons as well! It was a full week!!

Next week, we will spend time with more fables and focus on drawing animals together, creating summaries for the stories as well as continuing to review lessons from the last school year. We will be working on mathematical word problems based off our read aloud of My Father's Dragon as well as playing various number games.

We have kept water bottles full and will plan on doing the same next week! The weather should "cool down" into the 80's (!), so we will continue to focus on hydration and transitioning in and out of the dome, woods and building for classes as needed. Please help your child to drink plenty of fluids in the afternoon and evening as it helps them replenish all that is lost during the day. After our start back to school, long nights of restful sleep are important too!

Thank you all for your support and sharing your children with us! We are off to a wonderful start and are looking forward to a full and fun school year!

With gratitude,

Ki Melissa

First Grade: August 12 - 16

Hello first grade families!

We have now officially finished our first week of school. I have told stories such as Hans My Hedgehog and The Three Billy Goats Gruff. The students have worked diligently at creating their pictures to go with their stories and that tie into our form drawings. We have worked on posture, holding the crayon correctly, and building up the stamina needed for standing during the main lesson.

They have started their specials with Mandarin, Spanish, and even environmental education. The children have moved into what is expected from them while they were in kindergarten to what is now expected from them in their first grade year.

We will continue to move through our form drawings as the children get to the hear the stories from Grimm and other fairy tales from around the world.

Reminders:

Moving forward with next week we will only be in the creek on Fridays.

Please give gentle reminders to your child about talking about things in the media. I have had to give constant reminders to the children about not singing songs from movies or talking about movies/ television shows. If you need help with finding other activities for your child to do, that is media free, please feel free to email me.

Thank you,

Ki Aja

Kindergarten: August 12 - 16

Greetings Forestgarten Families!

Our first week has been full of wonderful adventures!  Despite the heat wave, we have stayed cool and comfortable in the forest, which is mostly shade covered, and playing in the creek has certainly helped as well!

It was delightful to watch the children splash and play blissfully in the cool, crisp creek water. They found snails and a baby salamander, played on the slide with buckets of water, and built beautiful and creative sand structures.

During our main lesson, where children are offered the opportunity to participate in a practical or creative task or activity, we observed many of the students hard at work, or hard at play, as we like to say :)  Some of our activities included rolling yarn into balls, sanding sticks found in the forest and watercolor painting.

The children were excited to see Ki Cerina and Ki Paulyna for Mandarin and Spanish.  We will soon begin American Sign Language as well with Ki Emily.  The new students jumped right into the lessons, while our returning students remembered many of the songs and vocabulary from last year.

Our story this week was called Deep in the Forest.  It was about a bear named Bernie and was very similar to a fairy tale that we all know very well.  Bernie is a curious bear who strays from his family and stumbles into some fun and not-so-fun adventures before returning to the safety of his mother’s arms.  Ask your Forestgartener to fill in the details!

After lunch we move inside each day for rest time, which starts with a mindfulness meditation to help the students calm and relax their bodies.  After the meditation, the students are read to quietly for a few minutes as they lay on their rest mats.  Midway through the rest hour, a simple, quiet activity is offered at the classroom table for students who are still awake and want to participate.  We spent this past week cleaning our block crayons, rolling beeswax candles, and coloring.  After resting, the children played in the classroom to escape the hot afternoon sun before returning outside to the playground for closing circle and pick-up.

A few reminders:

·     Pack a large, full bottle of water each day. We refill water bottles as necessary but it is helpful for the students to come prepared with a significant supply.

·     Please send your child prepared to play in the creek.  If they wish to wear a bathing suit under their clothing, that is fine; however, bathing suits are not required as long as students have an extra pair of dry clothes.  It helps our morning to run more smoothly if students do not need to change into their bathing suit upon arriving at school, as we go into the creek around 9:30am. If your child does wish to wear a bathing suit, please be mindful that it should cover the entire torso area. ** If there has been a rain storm the previous night, we will not play in the creek the following day due to rising water levels and run off.

·     Include all needed utensils in your child’s lunch box

·     A wet bag or grocery sack is very helpful to store wet, muddy clothes in your child’s backpack

Thank you for sharing your child with us.  We are so very excited for all of the adventures that lie ahead this year! As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to us.

Kindly,

Ki Fatima

Ki Holly

Ki Amy

Joyful Beginnings: August 12 - 16

This week we had a lot of eager kitchen helpers. The students chopped carrots, celery, and apples for our morning snacks. On Wednesday, they kneaded their own corn tortillas and ate them fresh from the oven. We fed the animals in the garden and skipped through the forest to the shady forest playground. The students explored the swings, had fun in the mud kitchen, and helped the Kindergarten students to dig a big hole in search for dinosaur bones.

Overall, the children are becoming comfortable attending Joyful Beginnings and are easing into our daily routine. As parents, you can help your child thrive at home by establishing healthy routines and fostering creative and imaginative play by limiting TV and other media exposure.

On Tuesday, Ki Ieva flew to Latvia to attend her sister's wedding. Ki Holly will be stepping in for Ki Ieva until her return on Monday, August 26. Please make sure that send your child to school with a filled water bottle every day and that bottles and snack containers are labeled with your child's name.

Upper Grades: August 8-9

The Upper Grades class kicked off the school year with an overnight trip to Crockford-Pigeon Mountain Wildlife Management Area in North Georgia. The students had responsibility for setting up and breaking down their camp sites and cooking their own meals. We took a dip in a cold spring, did some bouldering in Rocktown, and had a guide lead us into Pettyjohn Cave. The trip provided opportunities for team-building and bonding and gave us a glimpse into some of the topics we'll study this year like geology and mineralogy, thermodynamics. This week we'll be back in the classroom continuing our theme of overcoming obstacles and developing a growth mindset.
